I picked up the Pope/Popemobile set at the Disney Store today thinking it was the last day of the sale and getting tired of looking for the Mattel ones. They looked good, I thought, and I'd spend the extra $20 or so to be done with the search. Each version had its pluses and minuses, and this set looked really sharp in the store.

When I got home I realized they were both missing some of their decal work, and I really noticed the Disney Store method of applying capsule-shaped decals for each set of pupils. They also just seemed kind of tinny, like the Disney Store diecast do.

I also just hate having cars I don't want, and this set had a lot. So back it goes, but before I re-attached the Pope I took a shot to try and match one of Met's…I can't make a size comparison, but it's neat to see the differences. (The Pope looks really big in the DS one compared to his ride; you do have to angle him to get him in.)

Thanks for the comparison pictures.  It's too bad the DS quality turned out to be unacceptable.  It is interesting that there are so many little differences between the Mattel and Disney Store versions here.

Honestly, I'm kind of glad that the DS stuff is mostly crummier and out of scale, as it makes it easier to pass on them.  I think perhaps Paddy O'Concrete is the finest DS release thus far, or maybe Crabby.

Agreed on all points! Big Frank too, of course! I never have gotten Crabby…really neat but not into him. (Probably because I thought the stunt-casted voice actor was lousy, I think.)

Thanks for the photo. Looks to me like the Mattel Pope might be good with the Disney Store Popemobile.

The Pope is cramped Yell! Mattel Pope and Mobile are the winners IMO!
