I cant bring myself to buy a Apple I car for Masons b-day since they are between $40 and $60. He is just going to slam them all together since his favorite scenario is the crash scene. So I am going to try and make one. I know there are some custom makers on here so if they could pass their infinite wisdom to me I would greatly appreciate it.
I don't have infinite wisdom, or really any expertise in this, but I have been researching this a little. There are some great old posts on here, one shows Aroldo's expertly made Apple customs, another shows Kevin (?) going through some of the process. There is a post on CTT where people have posted custom hauler graphics, which gives some helpful clues. The thin book from HobbyTown entitled Scale Modeling For Beginner's has a great section on decals. The most important thing about decals is that they stick best to a gloss surface. So you have to apply finish, then decals, then more finish. I've made some decals using Testor's decal paper, a bottom-of-the-line HP inkjet printer, and Word to resize a copied image, but what I've found is that cheap materials equals cheap looking graphics. The customizers who make Apple cars that look like the real thing must have some really nice equipment, or at least Photoshop/Illustrator. The other thing I've found out is that you can soak the body in brake fluid for a while to remove the old paint, then start from there. Oh, you can put new rivets in in place of the old ones using a drill press, or just buy some screws from the hardware store. Hopefully a real expert will chime in with some help. Good luck!
