I am considering picking up a Blu Ray McQueen. Can anyone offer pointers on how to verify the legitimacy of one? If it is sealed in baggie is that a pretty good bet it is the real deal?
TIA

It can be sealed in the baggie but it depends on the wording on the baggie.
The original Blu Ray Car was sent in a padded mailer from DMR fullfillment. It came in a baggie which has the number M8736 and Blue Ray Mcqueen wording on it.
pictures here of the baggie and car.

I'd like to add that if the seller cannot produce the original brown mailing envelope, think twice before you buy!

Really John? If the inner baggie seems to be complete and correct, what would be your concern if the outer envelope is not present? I imagine plenty of folks got rid of the outer envelope right away.

Tom, can't speak for John. But here is my take.
I kept both of my DMR mailing envelopes from Walt Disney Home Entertainment with my name on them, put them away along with other documentation of rare cars like the Faux Wheel Drive from Allo France with their original letter and baggies, Speedway of the South letter from Mattel and the actual mailing envelope it came in which was addressed to me.
In 2008 after the Disney Mattel offer of Nov 2007, there were fakes of Blu Ray Mcqueens which came in plain baggies and people bought at high prices, most were in baggies with German on them. The only official release from Disney was in the United states, so the correct baggie would be in the English language, with the date code of 2427 EA. If you are paying a high price for a real Blu Ray Mcqueen then the mailer with it would be proof from 2007. Even the fakes had the correct production date on the bottom, but the baggies they came in were plain, without the correct printing on it. However Mattel "found" some this year and gave them away at SDCC. Kevin Nascarbroncos fan posted pictures of these in the SDCC thread IIRC. Not sure if they were in the baggie or not.
The padded mailer would be very hard to forge with the address label from Disney, so if the seller has it then you have provenance, its the extra assurance you are getting the original. The price you pay = Price accordingly.
Mets article addressed all this.

To me, throwing away the outer envelope is like a kid in the 1950's or 1960's who threw away the box that a game or toy came in. Yeah the stuff inside is nice, but who doesn't want the box to go with it? Makes it more legitimate and valuable to me.

That is why I always kept the Cardbacks to all of my Cars toys I opened. I have them all the way from the Desert back.

So it makes sense the outer envelope adds to the provenance, but is it fair to say that a correct number car with correct sealed baggie is likely authentic, even if it came from SDCC and not the promo, it is still a genuine Mattel Car?

Like BMW pointed out, some of the fakes have the correct number on the bottom, so who's to say?

Can somebody please post a pic of a fake BR McQueen with the correct number on bottom? I've never heard of such a thing.

Sounds like some are saying "no outer envelope=spurious".
With all respect, I am going to have to disagree. It seems there is no way to prove a BR LMQ is a fake if the numbers are correct and the inner baggie is present and sealed. In other words, you may not be able to say, with 100% accuracy, that one meeting these conditions is genuine, but the opposite cannot be said either.
Is there an assumption that at some point counterfeit inner baggies and counterfeit Cars with correct numbers were produced?

I agree with you, Tom. And contrary to what is stated above, Met, in his post on the matter, states that while there are fakes out there with the proper date code, it would (I'm paraphrasing) be "really hard to duplicate the baggy". The only other conversation I could find about fake BRMs with the baggy was a thread in CTT where arbara (BMW above) says that the only fake baggies were ones with German writing, and that if you got one with the normal baggy you were getting a real BRM. Not sure why she's changing her tune here. Maybe I missed a follow-up post somewhere.

So true, John. I have a couple of old Ny-Lint toys from the '50's. The ones with box are definitely more valuable. Especially the Electronic Cannon, the box had targets on the back, which was even more of an inducement to destroy the box. So these boxes are really hard to find. Additionally, I am sure a lot of retailers took the toys out of the boxes, in order to display them, as soon as they got them.

Not all the Blue Rays came in taped baggies. If someone wanted to switch the real one out in the proper baggie for the back door versions which sold in the Faux Wheel Drive plain promo baggie , it would be easy to do.
Back door versions were put together with the date code on the bottom, some with dates ending in 8, and the wrong base color. Read the comments section.
Just saying know the product before you buy at a high price.

Tom,
How is the hunt for the Blu-Ray? Seller on ebay emailed me with her link to her collection that she is selling. She has a BR Mcqueen listed, sealed in baggie, with shipping label and envelop. I cant post an ebay link at work, but look up Member: Grandelatte.
Hope this helps.
I think she wanted $85 starting bid. Might be a little high?????

I am happy with him, now the question is to keep the baggie sealed, or to remove the baggie and put him in a display case…
