You no longer have to get the expensive box set with half of the racers and crew chiefs to get a disneystore john lassetire. 

Now the ds version has a black cover on the bed of the truck, as compared to Mattels version without a cover. Mattels could very easily be a Dexter Hoover repaint with new expression and headset? So if ds is correct with cover Mattel was just to lazy to update? Then, look at the surfer john truck, that does not have a cover, but it also had to hold the surfboard, sooo… I don't believe it's visible in the film. You decide which is more cannon.

I only bought the chase mater and lightning…
