Thanks to my insomnia I was reading some threads about collectors opening cases in the store and getting first pick. (I think most post were from collectors overseas.) Ok, I have been hunting since October, and rarely do i ask if they have more cars or cases in the back room. If i do ask I usually get brushed off. Anybody had any experience with this? Should I be more persistant? As a collector do you ask? I know if I was looking for a pair of shoes I would, so why should cars be any different?
I do occasionally see unopened cases on the top shelves at TRU. I don't know how to read the boxes yet, but are the stockers willing to get them down and let you buy a few from the case for personal collecting? and my take 5 friends…lol
Not trying to start an ethical debate, just want to know other's experiences have been.

I have found that letting them know you are a collector and asking for certain ones by name they will either bring out any cases or the individual cars I'm looking for. Provided that they have any in back. I've gone to so many stores that most associates know me as they guy looking for Cars and if or when they might be getting something new in. It just pays to be polite and honest!

At target, I always check the DCPI in the computer first…then ask politely. it helps to have a kid with you 🙂
TRU and target post warnings about collectors in my area, so mentioning you are collector may not help. not dishonest, just not giving all information.

Dun, still laughing 5 minutes after reading your post… lol, not sure if my 3 year old would be a help or hindrance, the 16 definitely not! I just have this mental picture of myself in Target with my 3 year old on my hip. (3 yo screams when he is put in the cart.) Trying to get the 16 year old to pull the earbuds out of his head long enough for me to ask him to hold the wiggling 3 year old. 16 year keeps saying are we done yet? (overly loud sighing) followed by: Can we go now? Then the 3 year slides off my hip and starts running from me as I chase him around the toy section, encouraging the 16 yo to help me capture the 3 yo. The target employee is left in the dust, dazed and confused. LOL, I will try anything once for cars! hmmm and I thought I might have to bat my eyelashes….
What do you mean TRU and Target post warnings about collectors? Like mug shots on the employee lunch room bulletin board? Warning the employees about what?
DCPI in the computer? Do you use your smart phone or the registry computers to do this? Is this the bar code number on the back of the box? I will have to look into this, sounds like it could be really helpful!
Thanks for info!

There are little signs on the shelf that say:
Attention Collectors: Items deemd as collectible won't be hunted for in the back room…or something like that. no joke. I'm sure others can verify this.
target uses there own system. All the Cars 2 singles have a single DCPI #…makes it really hard to see what's in stock…but it will tell you that there are more out back or not..

It's true about the signs, although I've only seen them at one Target, and they disappeared right about the time that Cars 2 stuff stopped selling, late last summer or so.

I remember those signs used to be on the Hot Wheels Monster Jams at my Target and WM a few years ago. I have not seen them since.

Several Targets in my area have had and I think still do have these signs. At one such store a clerk checked the stockroom stock for me anyway, so you there's no harm in asking for help. It may help to let them know that your "children are crazy about these" (in my case, true anyway; and in some cases it's true for the inner-child – still true). I've had many, many helpful clerks at KMart who are willing to let you know their delivery schedule and to check for stock in the back. With Target it's been 50/50, depends on the mood of the clerk. It might be a moot point now, if the golden days of Cars 2 hunting are behind us….

I've never seen these signs. I think there is nothing wrong with asking nicely if you really want something. I can see it being bad form if a person is trying to horde some Cars to resell for a profit, but generally I think the store is there to make money and provide good service, so why not? At the same time, if you are persistent you should eventually find all the Cars you want just by cruising the pegs on a regular basis. One time at Target I asked for them to check the back stock and I scored 2 deluxe DD Buses and 2 Reds before the embargo date. I thought it was pretty cool to get these early and I traded one each to another T5er and kept the other. These both eventually became fairly common, but it was cool to have them when they were brand new.

hello all, i've had mixed results over the past years. it all depends on the person. first thing dont tell them ur a collector. the kid thing works the best i think. some sales people are super nice, some give u wierd looks, funny answers. like someone said earlier, alot of times they get to know u. i like target and meijier around me. because of the stockroom location idea. i have always been trying to find everything, and it is hard if the cases are not being shipped to your house. my overall advise is keep trying. good luck
happy hunting!!!!

I've never had any problems with letting them know I am a collector. I only ever ask for 2 of what I'm looking for. I'm sure if you hoard everything to not give anyone else a chance, they might give you a hard time.

When the Final Lap series was at Target I went in one day and scanned one of the cars to see if there were others in the backroom, since I was missing certain ones. It scanned that they did have some in the back, so I approached a manager and he said that they would not get them for me because they do not stock until the peg is completely empty. This really ticked me off, so I took all the cars that were on the peg, hid them in the next aisle, and then asked another associate if he would get them for me, which he did. You would think they would want to make their customers happy by bringing out stock. The whole point of retail is to move as much stock as possible as quickly as possible.

been there, sometimes when they really make me mad i wipe the whole stock out and return them to a different target then go when shift change. it sucks sometimes when they re-stock the same cases. but the past couple of months have been so nice one lady brought me out 6 cases in a shopping cart.
happy hunting
