The Art of CARS 2 is totally honest. It is totally 100% freakin’ sheer art.
The sheer amount of art, artistry, blood, sweat, toil and art on every single square smidgen just staggers the imagination. Then you open the book. 🙂
There are the things you’d expect – the sheer details and storyboards … but you also get to see the fun … and work of totally background items that most people might’ve missed entirely …
Including scenes that did not make the final film.
The original story had 5 races – the Paris & Germany race scenes were dropped.
And characters lost … (Zil)
Or just random cool stuff …
Basically, you could buy 2 copies of this book, cut off the cover and binding, buy a bunch of frames and art up your walls.
I’m sure some of you were hoping it was a crappy edition with a ton of pages of just text about how to choose the right brush or what computer stylus is best for CAD design … instead there are several hundred drawings, renderings, illustrations, watercolors, paintings and doodles from a few hundred world class artists. So, as you suspect, it’s really freakin’ great. 🙂
As you can tell from the sample pages above, it’s kind of nice in the way that Hawaii is kind of nice. 🙂
There is a downside to the book. There is a back cover and the book ends at 160 pages. And you do have to wait a few days to get it from Amazon for $26.40.
And it is only available as a Treebook version.

Sounds awesome!
I’ve been bobbling a book purchase in my head of this for some time.
When I got to go to the Cartoon Art Museum’s benefit held at Pixar in early December, they had alot of making-of material hanging in the second floor area of the Pixar Atrium (though we were not allowed to take photos..and I do not want to be blacklisted from Pixar, so I complied).
The cool thing for me were seeing the maquettes, aka the sculpted cars in turn-around form. I saw Zil (that single-headlight reminds me so much of the Tucker 48, but the image of that car coming out of the smoke would have been a nice surprise), and they even had one of the Galloping Grinder!
There also was plenty of signage examples, and more. Even the rice-paper calligraphy imagery that hung in the Japanese museum they go to was on display in smaller form, with the calligraphy markings resembling cars.
I always hate the people that go, ‘Oh, Pixar just got lazy and decided to make another stupid movie about cars. Just wanted a quick cash-grab.’ I still don’t feel that could be the case when one looks at all the art and effort they put into the film.
I am always amazed at the amout of detail that Pixar puts into their movies. But like John said, there’s some charm lacking that Cars1 had. I can watch Cars2 over and over just to check out the backgrounds, however I can watch cars1 over and over for the story.

Ver nice, but they still cannot top the magic of the original.
