Many of my all time favorite films are animated. Looking at the list of the 18 above, I see 2 in particular that I feel were at least as good as, if not better than Cars2, which I feel was a minor step back from the original.
The Nickelodeon/Paramount offering of “Rango” had a great storyline, nice soundtrack and, as usual, an over-the-top title performance by Johnny Depp. The supporting cast was great, especially Isla Fisher as Beans, Abigal Breslin as Priscilla and Alfred Molina as Roadkill. The movie also features a group of singers who performed between scenes; perhaps an homage to Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye who did the same in “Cat Ballou” way back in 1965. Including “Rango” in the “Western” genre, I actually enjoyed it more than some live-action western movies I have seen.
I went to see Dreamworks’ “Puss In Boots” this past weekend. Antonio Banderas took his supporting role from the Shrek franchise and turned it into a master work of intertwined nursery rhymes, including “Jack & the Beanstalk”, “Humpty Dumpty”, and “Jack & Jill”. The film offers action, romance, great artwork, a very energetic soundtrack and even excellent choreography in the flamenco dance scenes. You gotta see it; the cats have “the moves”!
I believe either of these 2 films could do better in the Academy voting than Cars2.
Not a very strong year for animated movies I guess. Was Tangled last year already? Thought JL did a fantastic job with Tangled. The kids really enjoyed it as did I and the soundtrack was great too.
Uh oh.
Cars has gotta go up against Happy Feet again?
