Mattel Disney Pixar CARS 2 Diecast: Buying Strategies …
Here’s a sneak peek at what Monday, May 16th should look like at WM, Target and TRU … or slightly earlier for 24-hour Walmarts … or really early for those stores who cannot read or decipher a calendar.
Of course, each store will have their exclusives so you’ll have to decide what configuration you’ll want to buy where (don’t worry, more checklists are coming).
While I cannot say your store will look like this, I believe most of the Big Three stores are getting 10-12 cases of EVERYTHING on card so the likelihood of anyone running out are pretty remote. This is not like the situation from the past two years where there are only 2-4 new CARS with each case and stores might get 2 cases. They are literally stocking so they do not have to order anything again until the film comes out in June 24th.
And if you’re only buying one to open and especially if you don’t really care too much about eye-face plate variants, double check our buying matrix and keep in mind that just because the list price for a box set might not be the optimal pricing per CAR, there is almost certainly going to be a sale if not during the week of May 16th – and there will be most likely another sale before the movie opens. Box sets with higher price points have the largest room to sales – while you’re not going to see Black Friday like pricing, a discount of $5-$10 off a playset or a trackset is a much nicer price point.
Also keep in mind built in discounts. Using a Target credit card will net you a 5% discount immediately (just pay it off at the end of the month). TRU offers a Rewards Program – I don’t remember the details off hand but if you plan them anyway, getting to the TRU minimum ($100? $150?) will net you $10-$20 in “TRU cash,” in effect, a rebate though of course, you have to re-spend it at TRU but I’m guessing but hey, it’s not like it’s a coupon to the MuleChow store (well, for most of us) 🙂
BTW, the bottom right is the World Grand Prix Launcher & Carrying Case.
As you can see, it stores and launches 10 CARS … It looks like you get a plastic McQ included?
This is NOT the Race Display Carrying Case that holds 40 CARS.
Most of these photos are from Australia and MCL Sydney – Additional Australia photos from “Hollywood7,” – Thanks – clearly they are all stocked to go. (also Australian pricing).
One US Walmart photo from Mariela. Thanks for the nice photos. Now US retailers have a snapshot of the what their CARS section reset should look like.
Yes, soon US stores will begin to look like this – it might be as early as Saturday May 14th for 24-hour stores, May 15 or May 16th but the deluge is coming.
And don’t be a spoiled brat and comment on May 16th at 10:32 AM that you are bored with wave 1 and when is wave 2 coming? 🙂
It’s not a mirage, the oasis of CARS 2 CARS is just over the big sand dune.
Stay thirsty … one week.

It looks like my first buying strategy will be to return a bunch of singles to Family Dollar and buy the multi-packs on the 16th. Right now, I have one of each from Case B singles. Would I be better off keeping them unopened for the future and just get the multipacks to open? I will still end up with duplicates even with all the multipacks opened. There ia a lot to think about this week!
Depending on how many extra singles you have you can always hang on to a few for Toys for Tots…
They want unwrapped toys still in the package. We can get creative and make all new four packs with the extra McQueens, Maters, Finns, Grems, Acers, Holleys, Professor Z’s, Jeff Gorvettes, and Francescos we are going to end up with! Just don’t try to return them to Target.
My WalMart in Niagara Falls looked like this today when I went in. There were at least 3 cases of singles, a case of Deluxe, 4 cases of 2-Packs, 3 cases of Siddeley Spy Jet, a case of the Tokyo Spinout Track Set, a case of Pullbacks, and almost a dozen cases of Lights & Sounds.
Plus there was one really cool carrying case. I sent pics to Met so I think they’ll be posted soon.
Wow you got lucky. My Wal-Mart had nothing but a clearance section for the old ones in Colorado Springs CO
I don’t know how the great Aussie collectors do it with those kind of prices.
I know if they put them up to 10.00 for a single here not many would buy them. The toons at some area TRU stores are 6.99 ea. and they have clogged the pegs ever since. Most Americans won’t or don’t care to go over 5.00 for a single.
WOO HOO !!!!!
JACKPOT !
The 10 cars Launcher looks very nice and McQueen is made of plastic..it costs $26.97 + tax
There is a ‘Grover’ blue/white airplane coming out. It is the one that McQuen & Co. must use to fly in. It is RC, does not fly and can carry 5 cars in it. Saw it at a Walmart in Avon IN.
Fully stocked shelves… it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that, other than with pegwarmers…
My buying strategy… buy what I need (OK, want)… don’t spend too much money (too late, that’s not going to be possible)… meet up with friends later that day in order to trade…
I think I’m making good use of taking a vacation day on May 16… but with gas at $4.29 a gallon, I may cancel my plans for other shopping days and road trips that week.
I never do a trip to hunt CARS. Always stop on my way to or from work or when I must go somewhere else I really need to.
Starting in about 9 days there won’t be any hunting for a while. It will be a harvest!
Thanks for correcting me. You’re right! A real good and easy harvest… Ahhhhhhh finally. What a relief it will be… An expensive one but we asked for it isn’t it?
I saw the boxed 3 packs (2 singles and a deluxe) and have to say the packaging was a HUGE dissapointment. Too much stuff in one box. I love the single cars. They look sweet. I passed on ALL the 3 packs. They all appear to be re-packs (mostly). Does anyone else think they look big and clunky?
I have scratched off all the 3 pack from my shopping list for next week. They are useless if you try to get only one of each C2…
Quercy, do you have a list. I need only 1 car each and no repeat as much as possible. Please email me if you have, edmybrat (at) yahoo dot com .Thank you.
Just sent you my strategic list. Not perfection but there at 95%…
Thank you so much for the list, works perfect for me.
Man, those Aussie prices are heinous.
I feel the pain.
I need anyone who helps me 🙁
What do you need ?
ALL!
Playsets,3 pcks,5pcks,7pcks……ecc.ecc..
My buying strategy is not to buy any.
I am retired.
It was a fun ride for the first movie; but no room for a second set of cars.
Also will be investing in some side projects; and trying to reduce purchases on items made in China.
Sorry to hear your moving on. I have the exact opposite strategy. Buying much of everything. We are full steam ahead.
As for not buying things made in China- I guess you won’t be buying much then because almost everything is made there. A communist country no less. You know yesterday’s supposed enemy we had to fight useless wars against for the benefit of those that profit off such things. Oh I am sorry I think the story we are supposed to believe is by spending billions and losing lives 15,000 miles away that’s actually for our freedom. Yeah that’s it. I am supposed to just go along with what we are told even if it doesn’t make sense.
Anyway the time to avoid buying from China happened many years ago when the Wealthy corporations started intentionally moving the factory jobs out of the western countries. Which by the way the American taxpayers funded through the NAFTA and GAT treaties.
However the regular citizens were too busy entertaining themselves or whatever to notice or care. So it’s too late now.
The thing about reality is even if you choose to ignore or deny it- the reality of the situation will eventually catch up with us and it has and will continue to.
World Grand Prix Launcher & Carrying Case
Looks like I just found my new briefcase for work!!
Think you can fit a laptop in there?
Since I’m not in a hurry to get home to watch the Capitals in the playoffs anymore, I have my plan for the 16th…
-Leave for work @ 0330 hours.
-Hit Charlestown Walmart @ 0400 hours for 2 packs. If the Cars are not out yet, move on to the next 24 hour Walmart.
-If nesecesary, hit Frederick Walmart @ 0430 hours for 2 packs
-Start work @ 0530 hours.
-End work @ 1830 hours.
-Hit Germantown Walmart for any missed 2 packs
-Hit Germantown Target for racing 4 packs
-Hit Frederick Target if nesecesary for missing 4 packs
-Hit Frederick TRU for 5 pack if nesecesary
-Hit Martinsburg Walmart or Target if nesecesary.
-Go to sleep
I’m going to be in Westminster for the first time in a long time so I’m hitting EVERYTHING!!!
I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE 16TH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BANKRUPTCY HERE I COME!!!!!
Are you going to DC on Sunday or Monday for the Agents on a Mission tour?
We are going Monday. Will take Metro from Shady Grove for laughs.
looks like its going to be cool!!!
Ok, what is the Megasized McQueen in the second picture??? There are like a zillion of them … we need a close up!! 🙂
Thw World Grand Prix Launcher looks AWESOME!!!!!!!! 😀
I’m sorry, but “Megasized McQueen” is an anagram for “Quite a Pegwarmer”. 🙁
That is the exclusive metallic McQueen. Tru on west coast of oz as well as target and big w (the oz ‘big 3’) are all stocked up now in most stores I have been.
hmmmmmm ….. the metallic paint is SOOOOOOOOOOOO thick that is warrants the MEGAsized packaging … and let me guess …. the MEGAsized price …. jeeeeeezzzzzz
I just got a mailer from TRU with a Rewards card for $10 off $50 purchase, valid until the 28th. Sweet.
Got mine too… Believe me I will use it next week 🙂
