Some people have quibbled that Houser’s color isn’t quite right … if you go by the MEET THE CARS book, he’s certainly in the range …
And as others have noted, nice ultra sheen & shine on these CARS … plus all the detailing …
Okay, a lot of collectors have the other racers but maybe a nice set to donate by adding some more racers to the top row?
Or if your Chick is from 2006, this Chick is much shinier …
Since the other racers have had recent releases, there is not as much of a difference in their sheeny shine.

BTW, the box set is now listed as “Target Everyday 9-Pack,” so we might see a few more other 9-packs? Maybe more fans in the next one?

I have seen 7 sets at Targets and I bought 3 of the 9 packs. These are nice. You do have to look carefully if you are a mint in box collector. The plastic windows are easily scraped, and it seems Mattel did not protect them very well in shipment. I cherry picked by going to different Targets and picked the best 3.
Chuy case was restocked again and on sale at Target. They will give out rainchecks at the sale price. Good for 45 days. So stock up on the rainchecks if your Target does not have what you want at this week’s sale price of 6.99 for the deluxe/Megas.

Bessie has gotten harder to find again. The best bets so far have been stores like Burlington coat factory, Kohls, TJ Maxx, some found at Big lots (not by me) and grocery stores, like Kroger and in Texas HEB that carry toys (not all have a toy section so call or check first). I found 3 Bessies at HEB here, 2 at Kohls.
I FOUND ONE THAT HAD JUST BEEN RETURNED TO TARGET BECAUSE AN EMPLOYEE WAS PUTTING IT BACK ON THE SHELF WHILE I WAS IN THE AISLE. WHEN I LOOKED AT IT I NOTICED THAT THE 4 EXCLUSIVE CARS HAD BEEN REPLACED WITH 2 PISTON CUP RACE CARS AND 2 CREW CHIEFS. IT’S DISGUSTING WHAT SOME PEOPLE WILL DO.

No, John’s right. You have to hit less keys doing it in all caps. You have to hit shift every time you switch from caps to lowercase, and vice-versa. You don’t have to worry about that key in BBIGMIKE mode.

That set should be taken to the front desk, making them aware of what has been done to the set, then it can be treated as theft and handled on a loss prevention level.
That is really SICK!!! I would not be able to live with myself if I did that. The pleasure of the money I saved would be over-run by guilt!
I brought it to the attention of an employee who was working in that aisle. She was shocked but went about her business.
You should call the store manager, who can cross reference the return and / or review the video from the return counter. Next time that person buys something with hopefully the same debit / credit card, they could pull them to the side and call the cops.
I agree call management and let them know about it and they can be watching for that returner the next time.
The only problem I see with that approach is that it assumes that the returner wasn’t sold an altered set in the first place. I can foresee some unscrupulous person buying the set, repackaging it, and returning it to the store, where a clueless employee puts it back on the shelf. Another customer picks it up because “little Bobby has been looking for this,” takes it home, and doesn’t find out that it has the wrong CARS until little Bobby says something — whereupon that customer returns it. If Target’s inventory system can’t tell the difference between a buttload of unsellable lenticular LMQs and a fresh case of Lizzies, I doubt they can tell if one specific set left the store, came back, and was sold again.
If you’re going to accuse someone of theft, you’d better be certain!

Stig is absolutely correct. The returner cannot be charged with a crime due to insufficient eveidence.
So unfortunately there is no way of punishing the returner of the swapped out set. Despite how sleazy the practice is.
Matell should seal the boxes better though so once opened it cannot be made to look new again.
I am totally against the practice of swapped out returns but I must say I do feel some collectors who have a problem with placing 5 cars you don’t want in a set with 4 new ones do have a legitimate complaint.
They feel ripped off themselves. Of course they don’t have to buy the set and two wrongs don’t make a right but Mattel should not package sets this way.
Still think they will go on sale though, so just hold your receipt and most likely you will wind up paying about the same amount has the sleazy swap out people did to pay for the cars to replace the ones they took out and you won’t have to break any rules either.
The Target store in Manahawkin, NJ has several on the shelves as well. As a matter of fact it looks like none of them have moved over the past few days. Did find a ‘Tim Rimmer’ single on the rack right above it though. Was a nice find considering the store seems to rarely get anything new as of late. The “Cars Toons’ selection there have been grim lately as well. Still only ‘Mater The Greater’ and ‘Rescue Squad Mater’ collections only. It’s a shame when the local Kohls has more of a variety than Target and Walmart.
I remember when cars first came out in 2006 they were priced like Hot Wheels about $1.99 at Walmart. Now look at where we are 4 years later.
Funny thing is both are made of worthless pot metal and plastic and Hot Wheels are half the cost of cars.

$40 isn’t bad and for most that don’t have a target the only way to get the new releases is in boxed sets like this that go online.
If I buy it I will donate the extras to the cars cares program.
I actually agree that the cost is not all that bad on this set. My complaint is with the $30 Toons 4 packs… still can’t wrap my head around that one!
So they could put them on a $24.99 sale this week and STILL charge more than Kmart’s $22.19.
The rubber tire cars are £6 in the UK. i think thats $9each…could always be worse i suppose.
I-Am-Speed has a good idea for those who are openers. For us who are not it’s still five cars that we do not want. Yes it will be $20.00 for them when they come out as final lapers but then I still have 20 left over to spend on the next 4 new cars in the series. I guess that’s why they market things this way. Everyone has a different need or way of doing things.
Think about this for a minute before complaining too much.
You’re going to pay $5.00 plus tax for each of those newbies as a Final Lap car, IF they’re released as FLs, so there’s $20.00.
5 racers for $20.00 more.
Donate the unwanted racers to Toys For Tots and put smiles on the faces of kids who have little or nothing.
I bought 4 sets, 3 are already spoken for, and nobody’s complaining about the cost.
Toys For Tots will be very happy to receive the extras.

The only thing that turned me off is the price it costs to ship it here!! Fortunately for me, one amazing Take5 member shipped one of these great sets to me at his own expence! I LOVE TAKE5 MEMBERS!!!
Doesn’t Toys for Tots and the other similar organizations insist on new toys, i.e., still in their store packaging? Anybody know if they’d actually take loose CARS?
(MET: Yes, they want unopened but for instance, if you bought the Mack trailer and added some CARS or to the 9 -pack, if you added more CARS to the twist ties, that is acceptable. If you’re offering more play value and the additions are new … ).
Such a pity they wont take loose cars as most people will want to keep the box and donate the spare cars.
We never see sets as big as this in the UK, Too big to ship, would cost more than they could make from it, such a shame!
They won’t sell many of these at this price. They are already shelf warmers around here. I’d say definitely a future sale item.

The 4 Targets I visit on a regular visit all have the 9-packs warming the shelves. Each store has 3, 9-packs on the shelves.
They have been out on the shelves for about 2.5 weeks now, and not one of the 4 stores has sold any of the sets.
I love collecting these cars. I’ve been collecting since 2006 starting with the original desert back 12/15. This time I’m going to sit out on these 9 packs. Fourty dollars is just two much to pay for 4 new cars. I have a strong feeling that these cars will be out as singles early next year. All of the other cars have been out in 2 or more ways and I believe these will be too. Look how exclusive the MSOS set ended up. Most of us have our own sets now,that are a pretty good knock off to the original. At least to the common eye,they can’t tell the difference.
You’ve collected since 2006 and you’re not getting this set? As someone who has also been around since the beginning, I can’t even imagine passing on this wonderful set just because you have to pay $10 a car instead of $5.
One way I look at the extra cost is that it also comes as a nice display piece, including 5 racers (even though we do already own them).
I don’t love Mattel for doing it this way (and for a million other reasons) but that still wouldn’t stop me from buying this. No way.

this is a very nice box set… and overall I like the boxed sets over the singles…but I hate the way they always gouge the prices

I complained about the high price for the 4 new Cars… but I bought one the first time I saw it last Friday in Dayton (OH)… I’m hoping that it will be on sale on Black Friday… I have noticed several with damaged plastic or cardboard at every Target I’ve seen it at… Every store also had it in the back… but no more Final Lap, Team Crew Sets, Haulers, Team Hauler Sets, Deluxe Size Toons, or even lenticulars.
I have been wondering also if this DCPI # will be used for more sets in the future.
Hopefully some better racers like Tachomint, Vinyl Toupee etc. will be included with plastic tires in any possible subsequent sets released.
As for this set they are going to have to lower the price or put them on sale because as I expected only the hard core collectors are buying these.
Most average toy buyers are not going to spend 40.00 plus tax for some toy cars.
These sets are not moving and are already shelf warmers in the stores I have been visiting.
