Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: The Tale of Rollin’ Bowlin’ Mater
Since it’s almost becoming ‘legend,’ it’s time to put all some details down on the internet … so future generations will never forget …
In the Spring of 2006, along with many other CARS item, a “blue” Mater was featured in a “bowling game.” You set up pins, you throw Mater down the “alley” to knock over the pins.
It was not very ‘canon.’ At no point in the film does he appear in this paint scheme or with these words stenciled-decaled on his side … Fans and collectors realized its paint scheme was not correct but unsure of how many CARS would get released, some people used his as a stand-in for ‘Brand New Mater.’
In early 2007, a correct “Brand New Mater” who appeared in the flashback scene was released – further relegating ‘Blue Mater’ to just a “game piece.’
(while it’s not easy to read, his door reads TOW MATER, Towing & Salvage – Radiator Springs).
And of course, there’s no mention nor is their a ‘bowling scene’ in the film, CARS.
Also note, there was no OFFICIAL artwork from Pixar to use as “Blue Mater,” so rusty Mater was used as the cover art – further ‘proof’ that ‘Blue Mater’ was not canon.
But as he was (and is) as much diecast as rusty Mater AND from Mattel, there was always some debate. Personally, that was my argument that he was part of the lineup – he was diecast metal, in scale and from Mattel.
Further proof of his canonnocity arrived in the summer of 2006.
This box set (along with another one with 6 different CARS) showed up as an exclusive at BJ’s Warehouse – a small warehouse membership discount club on the East Coast.
It featured “Blue Mater,” Sheriff, Sally, Purple Ramone, Doc Hudson & Wingo.
At this point, CARS was just hitting the theaters and the presumption was it was just another kid’s movie and this was a kid’s toy box set. There was no artwork on the back and there was NO CAR names listed. In fact, the other box set (show below) was put in the same box to save on cost.
(there is a tiny designation showing that they are different product numbers but otherwise, as generic as can be).
These two box sets sold well on eBay throughout the summer of 2006 partially because they were exclusives but really, mostly because it was still extremely difficult to find most of the CARS so for around $20-$29, you could get 6 CARS in one fell swoop.
The box sets returned briefly around the holidays to BJ Warehouse in late 2006 but by then, the Supercharged single cards were easier to find (of the original 12 CARS) and most people had moved on so while there was still interest in these box sets – by late 2006 and early 2007, you could easily find them on ebay selling for only a slight premium above their original price at retail of $20.
And the Mater’s Rollin’ Bowlin’ Game?
Most stores were selling it for around $19.99 and there was not a whole lot of action on them. Even for completist, it was still essentially $19.99 for ONE DIECAST CAR and most stores (especially TRU) seem to have plenty on hand so there was no hurry.
So as 2006 rolled to an end, this CAR with no official name was considered a minor footnote. People who considered him part of the lineup bought him but others did not because he was not on card did not even had an official name – and his two forms of availability – one in a box set that could be easily found on eBay at a very slight premium and the game was everywhere where toys were sold – meant that he did not warrant much attention.
In February 2007, at NYCC/Toyfair, Mattel announced they would be releasing a very limited edition (500) of the CARS so far in a box set called the 2006 Factory Sealed Set. They auctioned off two at the show leaving 498 sets to be sold later.
By the time details of the set was announced for sale ($149) in Fall 2007, most people had lost interest. as the Supercharged cards were beginning to come out, a sealed box of the 16 Desert Cards + the 4 Desert Art Movie Moments + two CARS readily available – all CARS available for over a year meant interest in this was not very high.
I am not dismissing this set or downgrading it – just merely pointing out the general mood of CARS Collectors at the time. For most, all the attention was focused on the post-Sarge recall, trying to finish up the 20+ NEW Supercharged CARS and not buying 27 CARS they’ve already owned for up a year or longer plus … it was the Desert Art 16 cards and not the Desert Art 12 cards … sure, it was interesting that Dirt Track McQueen & the now named Rollin’ Bowlin’ Mater CARS were available ONLY on Desert card art here in this set, but since Dirt Track McQueen was easy to find as a single and the game was available at Walgreen’s for $23.99, it was not a huge deal. The set sold out in a few hours but through 2007 and for most of 2008, you could easily buy the set on eBay generally for under $200.
So, now, it was hard to argue against its canonnocity as it was included in a set called “Factory Sealed Set,” but of course, that’s not to say you have to agree with this but just saying … 🙂
In the holiday season of 2007, after 18 months on the shelf, they decided to mark down and clearance out the Mater’s Rollin’ Bowlin’ Game – at KB Toys (the toy outlet chain – now closed) – I bought one at $9.99 – slightly grumbling that I had to pay $9.99 for one diecast.
At $9.99, it seemed to sell much better and by early 2008, it was gone from most store shelves.
Then slowly but surely, people realized it was no longer available and of course, prices started to creep up and now spike up.
But hey, that’s CARS.
(And yes, Dirt Track McQueen was also only available on a Desert Art card in this set but since he’s been re-released many times, the interest in him is much more dim).
Would anybody have on of the Maters to sell reasonable?
I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought several of these from TRU at $7.98. They had a whole pallet full just collecting dust for the longest time………
I have never seen the single wheel version though, only the dually…..
RBM rocks . . . I will I would have bought a couple more of them when KB had them at $10 . . . you know what they say about hind sight . . . its always 20/20.
Ohh duh! Did I get that twisted, you are right! And I’d better catch up on the Storyteller’s too huh…All the collectings got me losin my mind. Lastly, I’m not Jake…but just another “PitStop” of Las Vegas. He’s caucasian and I’m asian (LOL) ya dig! Also I’m not that fortunate nor do I have the time on running a successful Toys site. LOL to Jake of Pitstop Toyshop who I fully support and Lindsey (Flik’s friend) who is a sweetheart. Hope to see you guys at the next Con and rally up for some BBQ! “PitStop” of Las Vegas.
Thanks Al-V….. and the 2nd Annual TFAD BBQ will be even bigger and better… maybe we could even get Met there (no photos, please!!, but hugs are ok… 😉 )…. 😆
Rollin Bowlin Mater’s a classic and by far thee rarest, if not the rarest to have in anyone’s collection in any way or matter, whether it be loose, Factory Sealed, game, or the single DB single back out the Box. So don’t anyone be aggrevated or Belittle themselves over this if you slept on it, knowing what it could have or should have came out to be as a collector for the Dollars $$$$$. Thx for the info MET! As Ramone would say-“Respect the Classics Man!”
Don’t get me wrong – I really like RB Mater, but would gladly trade all the sets I have in storage right now for the exclusive Darth Mater or a genuine, authentic Ransburg Mcqueen.
i agree 🙂
Dude, that was Fillmore.
That was Fillmore – I believe Ramone develops a variation of that line in the Storyteller book when he falls for Flo 🙂
Just curious, is this Jake, or another PitStop?
Not Jake, but a dude from Vegas BABY!
. .. um, as he states below . . .I swear I didn’t see that . . . 🙂
Hey MET/others, do you have more information about the 2006 Factory Sealed Set? Anyone here have one?

What the…Not cool.
How on earth could that be more expensive than the MSOS???
$50.00… Damn Where’s my blue paint! lol
Wow, wish I had known this when the local Mattel store had them overflowing the shelves last year. My wife and I passed on it every time we visited the store since we were only getting the movie Cars for my son at the time.
I picked this up for $9.99 at the KB liquidation store in Chehalis,WA back in the day. I figured in the collecting toy world this would become a desired piece because it was not canon and it was issued by the holder of the Cars license. Current bids or BIN on eBay are $50-$125. Thank you Met for bringing this item to everybody’s attention. It should rack up a couple more dollars in “unrealized profits.”
LOL of course we never got one of these lol we dont have a kb toys around here AND lol we never saw one until it was tooo late LOL 😀
Getting off-topic, but PirateDad suggested that I post a link to the flickr photos of the purse that my wife is making available to fellow takefivers for the first time. Pillow cases are also available, photos of those posting soon:

I don’t know if MET will post info and photos as well, but until then, please check them out and email me if interested. A donation to takefive or CarsCares will be made from each sale.
One of the photos will show how large the purse is, big enough to hold big Disney Store Frank and his flock!
I love this post!! Thanks for the great info. We didn’t start collecting until 2008 and missed out on Rollin Bowlin Mater @ the store. Luckily my husband was able to pick up one from an ebaylien for a little over $15.
I was late to the game on RB Mater and bought him on ebay for about $35. We actually use the game as it was intended, it’s pretty cute.
It’s a great game!! We immediately pulled RB Mater and replaced him with old Rusty Mater though!
I’m gonna use Disney Store Frank on the set you sold to me. See if someone will beat me then… 😀
LOL! I think Disney Store Frank would knock the entire playset over!
Seriously though, was it worth the $2,750 I charged you?
It was worth every penny, and I referred everyone who asked about a set to you… I wonder why nobody ever e-mailed me back…
my son still plays the game lots too. On a slightly related side note he just got given Flo’s V8 Cafe and Ramone’s House of Body Art for his 4th birthday. He has been playing non stop with Ramones and has basically ignored Flo’s Cafe.
Nice post Met, thanks!
I haven’t paid attention for a few months – what is the “market value” of RB Mater currently?
What people dont know is……. Theres 2 different Rowling Bowlin Maters.
One has dual rear wheels and one that has single rear wheels.
The duals will give Mater more towing power and make him a better bowler!
Interesting – which is more common?
Also, completely off topic, but which TJ is the “rare” one – TUF GUE plate or TUF GUY? Thanks
TUF GUY
Huh? Really? Are there photos of the SRW version?
Do you know which is more common?
Dual Rear Wheels for sure!
Didn’t know that. Do you have photos of the 2 different versions of RB Mater?
Kevin – do you have both RB Mater versions yourself?
So who held onto my $10 KB Toys game for all this time? I have been trying to pay you for over a year now (whoever you are). Just make yourself known and I will send you the $10 plus shipping. I feel so bad to have put it off for so long. Please forgive me! I tell you what, I will send you an extra $5 to make up for the outlay of cash you so graciously put up for me. 🙂
I think it was either JackDaddy or MegaHeat. 😉
Very nice article Met, and informative too!
Paid $50 for mine from Joeycars, a good deal then, and a better deal now… Stupid Mattel!!! Stupid geographic bigotry not sending CAnada Cars, then or now….
PD, if you’ll send me $50(US)for every extra Rollin’ Bowlin’ you’d like to own, I “promise” to spend every waking moment(except when I’m sleeping) searching high and low(at every KB store) until I find every one that you need!
Man, that $50 would buy you a really nice CARS purse for your wife! 😉
Or some CARS pillow cases right? You should post some of those pics on Flickr…or maybe MET will do a post about them!! They are pretty sweet!!!
You mean like this?
http://www.flickr.com/groups/840774@N24
Those are photos of the latest CARS purse that my wife is making, available for the first time for fellow takefivers. She’s also making sets of pillow cases, will post images of those as well. For pricing info, email me @ tjgraham1924 at hotmail dot com
Sent you an email about the Cars purse. Just love it!
I still grumble at myself when I think about the huge pile of Mater’s Rollin’ Bowlin’ Games I left behind at KB Toys in December 2007. Oh well, at least I did buy a few!
I also picked mine up for $9.99 at KB – when I got it, I’m not kinding when I say that they had an entire pallet of them in the store. At the time I considered buying some of them to keep sealed but eventually passed up on it. They all disappeared pretty quick at that price. I didn’t even keep an unopened one, which I still kick myself for not doing.
I would have bought the whole pallet too, but the Manager was going off on eBayliens and I didn’t want to make him mad, so I just bought 8 for our collection, gifts, etc. But now I still look back and emulate Nancy Kerrigan: “WHY??!?!?”
😆 Very good visual…
When I very first got into Cars I picked up a flawless Rollin Bowlin Mater complete with the set at a swap meet/flea market for 1$. Best deal to this day I have ever done.
by set I mean the bowling game, not the factory set of Cars.
I’ll make you an even better deal. I’ll give you $2 for it. That’s 100% profit!
Don’t listen to the banker….he has bottom line in his veins…listen to the business Pirate…500% profit, I’ll give you $5!!!! Can;t do bettet than that!!!!!
Hey PD, dont upset the giant leprechaun
Are you after my LUcky Charms????
If Rollin Bowlin Mater is a lucky charm then yes!
Awesome post… and very informative to boot.
Never had much interest in this one – not to say that if I saw one in the above single I would have bought it.
As always, great background info Met.
never really liked rollin bowlin. I traded mine a while ago for sidewall shine.
