Mattel has also made great strides in their ability to add detail and more fanciful color schemes to these small metal models in ten years.

My son has pointed out to me that the Cars 3 Piston Cup Racers are very similar in body shape to the original (larger) Dale Ernhardt Jr No.8. They are longer than the Nitroade and RPM body design.
(MET: The first Piston Cup racers in CARS 3 (sponsors carried over from CARS 1) got changed for two reasons a) to see a new diecast (not that anyone minded) but also because NASCAR did update their car bodies between 2006 and 2016 – minor tweaks, nothing as radical as the next Gen racers … which resemble some of the super car manufacturer concept autos coming in the next 10 years).
