Mattel Disney Pixar CARS Toons: Dragon Lightning McQueen Variant?
“DawsonsToyBox” has sent along an interesting find …
A smiling Dragon Lightning McQueen – error or variant?
Normal expression Dragon Lightning McQueen. Annoyed … well, okay – Tough Guy LM.
So as of now – error Dragon Lightning McQueen unless you find a bunch of them, then VARIANT!
Thanks for the photo and heads up, “DawsonsToyBox.”

Found one the other night…and another member has found a couple as well, so im gonna call it!! VARIANT 😀
PLOT TWIST:
The 2014 Dragon McQueen with the FROWN is the variant/error.
I found 4 today that are smiling. The one I have in my collection is smiling. Everyone else reports smiling ones. The ones on eBay are all smiling. So I think the frown on a clean 2014 Dragon McQueen is the more unique piece.
(MET: Nicely called! 🙂 ).
Clean Dragon Lightning McQueen is smiling.
Dragon Lightning McQueen with Oil Stains is frowning.
This frowning Clean Dragon Lightning McQueen is an error.
(MET: Even if it’s an error, if there are enough released, it becomes a variant).
I disagree Met — an error is an error. So if there are enough released it’s just a “common error”, not a variant.
But we’ll never really know, so we have to make a determination at some point. Or can we just ask Mattel?
The story says the ‘smiling’ Dragon McQueen is the oddity but now we are saying the ‘frowning’ Dragon McQueen is the rare duck? Now I know why he is frowning, he’s just as confused.
Since these have segmented faces, and the Dragon frowning face with oil stains was released in the 3 pack Streets of Japan this year, it seems the frowning segmented mouth could have been wrongly put on this single. I have 3 new clean singles and all have the sheepish grin/smile, which is correct.
The original releases of these 3 versions:
#11 Dragon with Oil Stains (re released in 2014 3 pack)
#35 Dragon (clean) (rare) sheepish eyes and grin. (re released in 2014)
#31 Collectors Guide Metallic with Oil Stains (unique frown and mouth)
In uk this line is exclusive to asda, one i got last week is a smiler, we were looking at a few mcqueens and didnt notice any differences..but will have to go back and check – but maybe its the case i got them all on store except ito san and pakota – 3 stores ive checked and all present except these 2 (im guessing ito and pakota are in a different case?), just a thought!
ALL the LMcQ’s I saw today were smiley faces…….I vote variant.
(MET: Interesting – thanks!)
Both sans oil stains.
No, I just mean maybe they forgot to add the oil stains and then labeled it as the clean version. I don’t know the facial expressions of these characters, so I am just guessing.
Is one of them Dragon McQueen with Oil Stains, sans oil stains?
