Mattel Disney Planes: The Mysterious Metallic & Toy Fair Dusty’s Solved
“Brian Richardson” & “Derek Muranaga”sends along great photos that finally clears up the mystery of the acrylic box Dusty’s.
While there was a Dusty giveaway at Toy Fair, it looks like (Metallic) “Racing Dusty Crophopper” was supposed to be a Kmart Mail-Away. Derek’s very interesting photo of the box with product code started us down the path of resolving this.
The (metallic) “Racing Dusty Crophopper” matches the product code of this Plane.
Presumably, it was like the last CARS mail-away, buy some product, send in a receipt and get the above Metallic Dusty free. Also presumably, Kmart decided they didn’t want to order Planes product for the stores and pay for this promo …
The Toy Fair giveaway is the top one. It’s the same as a regular release Dusty Crophopper except with two additional drill holes to mount in the acrylic box. The acrylic box is stamped NEW YORK TOY FAIR 2014 on the right front.
Both acrylic boxes have the PLANES logo. The metallic Dusty also has a his racing #7 on the top of the box that the NYTF 2014 one does not.
The cardboard box is pretty obvious.
The front flap is also different.Â
And of course, the sides flaps confirm which is which.
It’s not known how many Toy Fair Dusty Crophopper’s were distributed but 500 were distributed at the 2011 Toy Fair when CARS 2 came out.
Meanwhile, clearly, there were some of these BJT31 (Metallic) “Racing Dusty Crophopper’s” produced – how many? They’re probably going to show up at a consolidator’s soon or perhaps overseas?
Thanks for the great photos, “Brian Richardson,” & “Derek Muranaga” for helping us clear up the mystery!
when I alerted Kmart’s head buyer about these showing up at Mattel’s El Segundo store he knew nothing about the GWP Planes and Mattel never offered Kmart this promotion, as per the email that Kevin posted. Its disappointing really that these will not be offered to Collectors through a Kmart promotion. I hope these corporations can fix their association. We all enjoyed the Kmart Cars Collector events.
So what about the RS Mcqueen car? Was that to be a Kmart promotion as well that was not offered to Kmart?
(thank you bmw – I am out of town and have extremely limited service to reply to emails)
So where are these
“KMT PREMIUM” planes now?
A few showed up at Mattel’s El Segundo store.
Direct from Kmart:
Hi Kevin, maybe you can advise back on this to Take 5.
Presumably, it was like the last CARS mail-away, buy some product, send in a receipt and get the above Metallic Dusty free. Also presumably, Kmart decided they didn’t want to order Planes product for the stores and pay for this promo.
The presumption is wrong. Kmart was not offered this promotional opportunity at all. When I discussed with my salesperson after I found out from Barbara, he had only just found out these were made. If offered Kmart would have done this GWP as we did purchase and sell Planes and continue to do so with new Planes Fire & Rescue Product. This would have been a great GWP opportunity for both Kmart and for our Planes & Cars collector customers.
Thanks.
Kmart
(MET: Perhaps when they told Mattel the last promo was too expensive and they weren’t doing anymore … Mattel actually believed them. 🙂 ).
Met you said “It’s not known how many Toy Fair Dusty Crophopper’s were distributed but 500 were distributed at the 2011 Toy Fair when CARS 2 came out.”
I think you mean 500 Lightning McQueens were distributed in 2011.
(MET: Yep).
