Blockbuster is closing most of their last 300 stores, I remember when video stores quit stocking Beta format movies in the 1980s. In my opinion (and that of many professional videographers who continued to use Beta for years afterward), Beta produced a superior image. JVC simply did a better job of marketing VHS than Sony did for Beta. Sony eventually regained the upper hand in the format battle with Blu-Ray in 2008.

Blockbuster is closing most of their last 300 stores, what’s next? A company with a fruit for a name will introduce a streaming video receiver which will be worn under the skin (like a pet chip) and enable the user to view movies virtually. The images would bypass the optical senses and go directly to the brain..

Blockbuster is closing most of their last 300 stores, I’m amazed at how quickly technology changes the way we live. I’ve seen many changes in my lifetime, but the progress of technology has been geometric over the last couple of decades.

Blockbuster is closing most of their last 300 stores, I remember when my wife and I went there about 15 years ago to rent a movie and she landed on “American Pie”. I was genuinely surprised, having heard about “that scene”, and asked if she was sure about that, but she insisted we get it because she heard it was really good.

We took it home and about 45 minutes in, I asked what she thought of it so far. She thought it was good but asked where “that guy” was. I asked who she meant, and she referred to the actor who been nominated for his role and received so many accolades.

It suddenly dawned on me that she was thinking of Kevin Spacey from “American BEAUTY”! We still laugh about it until this day.

Blockbuster is closing most of their last 300 stores, I’m disappointed but not entirely surprised. In most cases, when it comes to a showdown between storefront business and online business, the overhead of the storefront can be a tremendous disadvantage.

  • MackDaddy says:

    CONTEST ENTRY:

Blockbuster is closing most of their last 300 stores, I remember when I used to wait for the movie to be “out of stock” at my local kiosk then claim the “free” one day rental.

  • NascarFan says:

    I can remember when VCR’s didn’t exist, 3 channels on a good day… 2 for sure otherwise.

When VCR’s did come out, in our area it was illegal to “rent” a movie… you had to buy it and trade it in on another movie.

    Neither comments are contest entries.

(MET: That’s interesting on the illegal to rent movie thing).

    CONTEST ENTRY

Blockbuster is closing most of their last 300 stores, I remember when I was 11 or 12; and my parents rented ‘The Great Outdoors.’ The reason I remember this particular movie is because the moment my mom popped it in the VCR, a very nude woman appeared and started dancing on the screen. The look of horror on my mom’s face was priceless as she tried to get the tape back out and block the TV while standing in front of it. We learned that day that there were actually two movies named ‘The Great Outdoors.’ One was a John Candy classic. The other was usually stocked in the adult section.

    (MET: Funny!)
