Disney Toon PLANES: Theater Grosses – Still Doing Well
PLANES in its third week with nearly all kids going back to school is still doing well. It’s the end of the summer so the overall grosses are down but with 3 new movies opening, PLANES was BARELY beat out by 2 of them and beat out a third which is IMPRESSIVE for any third week film.
From Box Office Guru.
And with only a 36% drop means that it’s getting good word of mouth and with almost no animation competition until CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALL another month away (September 27, 2013), PLANES is about $18 million away from beating out TURBO – not likely but a possibility if PLANES keeps at it.
(Okay, there is a film called Last Flight of the Champion opening in a week but it’s from an obscure company and it looks like it was animated on a GameBoy).
If you like to know all the film stats, it’s already the 59th highest grossing film in the last year (Box Office Mojo). I’ll bet PLANES is around the 5th lowest budget film on that list (after a few really low budget horror films) – again, Disney could see the tracking and realized PLANES would pretty much break even after 1 week so of course, they greenlit the sequel.
If you really, really like your stats, PLANES is the 11th highest grossing film since 1980 with aircraft as a theme (Box Office Mojo). Of course this doesn’t factor in ticket inflation. AIRPLANE! is #8 on this list.
PLANES, the little movie that could.
In related news, “MONSTERS UNIVERSITY debuted in China with $13M this weekend–the biggest opening ever for Disney animation release there.”
I bet Planes sells a whole lot more merchandise than Turbo.
I went to see “Planes” last week and, frankly, I dcn’t understand much of the negative publicity I’ve seen regarding the voice actors, the plot, animation, lack of hunor, etc. Our local Sacramento Bee critic gave it 1.5 out of a possible 4. I found it to be rather enjoyable. It had a villain (or two), a romantic interest, a sweet side to the plot with a lesson-for-life, and some nice scenery to boot. Maybe a notch below (rather than “above”) the Cars movies.
I almost envisioned the late Paul Newman doing the voice of Skipper. Okay, so I’ll admit to being a sentimental senior citizen, but between myself and “kids” there are a lot of other people who could, and possibly, did enjoy this movie.
Wow! How did that Flight of the Champion movie ever get in the theatres? That should be straight to youtube material.
(MET: Coming in a week – something tells me opening night will not be a sellout. It will probably open in like 5 theaters so when it goes to video in a month, they can say – theatrical release!).
