Toys R Us to Expand into China
Shoppers in China will probably be confused when everything costs 3 times as much as the US … Maybe the factory backdoor sellers can cut out that annoying middleman Mattel. 🙄
Via the WSJ:
Toys “R” Us Inc. plans an online and bricks-and-mortar push in China, its top executive said, in a bet that a growing middle class will see play time as increasing essential.
To ply a market where many parents would sooner buy their children books than Barbies, the retailer is stocking up on toy microscopes, building blocks and other educational toys to win Chinese parents over.
The US-based company is launching online sales in China this week and plans to double its stores from a current 30 in the next few years, said CEO Jerry Storch in an interview. He declined to give a time frame for the store expansion.
It is very telling that Chinese parents would rather buy educational toys for their children. I am troubled that we Americans are losing our desire to become enlightened, bread and circus is all we need.
Find a new car and select toy in store are quite different to shopping online. I would like to pay double in store, since I enjoy this kind of shopping with my son.
But now they only have mater and McQueen here, no radiator springs classic, take flight, 2-pack, x-pack. the lasted car here is Miles.
Finn McMissile will prove to be the all-time greatest toy, stock up now boys and girls!
Will they sell backdoor cars?
Yup. Not sure how sucessful this will be. Shoppers will probably question,
‘Why buy original when knock offs and bootlegs are available for 1/10 the cost?’
‘I could go across the street and buy from the factory and bypass Mattel AND TRU and pay much less.’
You have to go where the money is. It certainly isn’t in the US anymore.
Interesting… Only time will tell…
