A dear friend lives on the Big Island and writes books on Volcanism.
He has done several National Geo documentaries.
I went to school in Hawaii and did an internship at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. We used to have a drinking game that involved ABC stores.
now i want a lava lamp…
My wife and I went to Hawaii for our 10th anniversary… we were told that ABC stood for All Blocks Covered… and they were… there were intersections that had ABC stores on 3 of the 4 corners.
The Big Island tour was amazing… walking over hardened (cooled) lava… seeing plant life starting back up where lava had been all around… walking in underground tunnels that had been created by lava flows… seeing the steam rise (from a safe distance) where the lava went into the ocean…
I want to go back one day…
there will probably be an abc store there before the old woman with the coconuts…

For those not in on the joke, it seems like there are 3,000,000 ABC Stores (convenience store) in the state of Hawaii. And you thought Starbucks was overdoing it!

I was on the Big Island in 1997 and witnessed this from afar. In fact it was when the Wahaula Heiau temple was destroyed by fire resulting from the lava flow:
