Kmart at 50: MMR Magazine Review
From “Mass Market Retailer,” the industry trade magazine.
“This is Kmart’s 50th anniversary. The first Kmart opened on March 1, 1962, in Garden City, Mich. That was the year, as well, that both Walmart and Target opened their initial discount stores.”
I wish the four K-Marts in my area would close. It would be interesting to see what would move into the open space. I’ve never seen a retail chain work so hard to keep customers away- dreary interiors, cramped aisles, overpriced merchandise, short on staff.
Twenty years from now we will be reminiscing about the ol’ Kmart, ToysRus, and Best Buy stores.
Rainman had it right. K-Mart does suck.
Without putting some money into their stores and working out the details on the inventory system, they may not make it through 2012.
I heard Oprah Winfrey is going to help celebrate the big 5-0 by inviting Associates from across the nation to the Chicago Theater, where she will tell them “YOU get a pink slip!… YOU get a pink slip!… YOU get a pink slip!… You’re ALL getting pink slips!!!!”
The sad thing is, other than the sign, most stores look exactly the way the store in the photos looked 50 YEARS AGO!
sadder still, i see kmarts with the same sign.
