Thailand Floods: Shortage of Digital Cameras & Hard Disk Drives
While the worst of the flooding is over and everyone seems safe now, one effect of the floods is a temporary shortage of Digital Cameras & Hard Disk Drive (HDD) components & assembly so if you were planning on getting one in the next month as a gift or for daily use, you might want to jump the gun a little and lock in your price by buying it now …
“Other companies caught up in the rising floodwaters include camera maker Nikon Corp., which saw the first floor of a manufacturing plant flooded, and Canon Inc., which said it wouldn’t be able to resume operations at a printer factory until Friday at the earliest.
California-based Western Digital Corp., meanwhile, said Tuesday that it suspended production of its hard drives in Thailand to focus on protecting its facilities and assessing the impact on its local suppliers. U.S. chip makers ON Semiconductor Corp. and Microsemi Corp. said they, too, have been affected by the floods in the midst of a traditionally busy quarter.”

Wow… and not in a good way… we’re still in the midst of deploying our new PCs for this fiscal year, and the drives are made in Thailand… a shortage of inventory will cause component prices to go up… not what we need with holiday shopping starting soon…
