Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS 2: Kmart Cars Day #6 – The FAQ and Facts
What is the Kmart CARS Collector Event Day?
Twice a year, Kmart stores offer EXCLUSIVE rubber tire Piston Cup racers. The online presale starts tomorrow for SEALED CASES of 20 CARS (check back early tomorrow morning – there will be a new post with the link to the page – link NOT live yet – earliest is west coast at 10:00 AM). If you prefer not to buy an entire case, the in-store event is NEXT Saturday June 25, 2011 at 11: 00 AM (your local time).
How Does it Work?
Generally around the toy section, they will set up a table – you will also see some people gathered about (from some to hopefully not too many). At around 11 AM, they will begin letting people draw numbers. The rules are that ANYONE who is capable of physically drawing a numbered ticket is eligible to draw … meaning pretty much anyone from the age of 6 month and up … they will then call out numbers randomly from the draw – if your number is called, the will start to cut open a box for you – you are allowed to select up to 5 CARS in the first go around.
Will I get the CARS I want?
It will all depend on how many boxes the store receives and how many people are drawing tickets. The most sought after CARS are the Piston Cup racers – there are at least two in each case so basically you can do the math as to how many people there are & that everyone can select 5. Now after everyone who has drawn a number has picked their 5, some stores hold additional drawings – other stores just open it up as a free for all.
How early should I go to the event?
OFFICIALLY, they are supposed to draw numbers at 11 AM and in the order of your drawn number. So, you might show up at 10:58 and draw a low number or show up at 8:30 AM and draw a high number.
WARNING – there are stores that aren’t going to follow the official, guidelines so you probably want to show up at least by 10:30-10:45 and scope out the situation … in some cases, you actually have to remind them to re-read their instructions. It’s by the number you draw and not when you begin to line up.
Good luck and have fun – again, pre order online SEALED CASES TOMORROW morning and IN STORE EVENT NEXT Saturday.
Here is the LINK. It may or may not be live yet.
(it did go live for 4 hours on Friday).

As enticing as the RT’s are, I’ve had to hold myself back regarding the World Grand Prix Rubber Tire racers…what got me into the whole Cars collecting ‘bug’ 5 years ago was when Mattel released Leak Less and Nitroade, and I wanted to collect all the SOTS racers…which took me 4 years.
I still feel that the Cars line started out in a great way, and I feel that maybe Lasseter is also riding high on the current releases for Cars 2, but I still feel that what befell Cars will befall the products for the sequel. It’s been tough in the last week trying to keep myself from even wanting to just collect Finn and his variants…because once I do that, I’ll be an extra $400+ lighter.
I don’t know if this is a stupid question, or even if it’s already been answered somewhere and I missed it…but is there any difference between this McQueen and the one from the 3-pack with Faux Wheel Drive and Gask-Its? I meant to ask this a while back and totally forgot until I saw the carded pictures.
Nope. Just first time as a single with rubber tires. If you are an opener…yawn.
Thanks. That’s pretty much what I figured, but I wanted to make sure.
Hopefully this one will have a better gloss coat than the 3-pack, which was more like semi-gloss, or just not enough coats of finish.
Totally on about this Manifold – the 3 pack with Gask its, FWD, Mcqueen RT were poorly finished. Hasty. Looking forward to getting a RT Mcqueen of quality.
Thankfully a friend will go to Kmart (since we don’t have this store) and he has an eagle eye. Said it before, the qc went down big time on the last couple of KDays. Kmart RT cars are light years away from the SOTS quality Cars.
Guess one can’t expect high quality in a mass production Car
They are all mass-produced, right? They should just do a better job. At least we don’t have QC issues with real-life accelerators and brakes to worry about. π
1000 high quality in the Motor Speedway Set (SOTS), those were not mass produced. Thats what I meant.
Gotcha. Do you suppose they simply get 1000 sets correct the first time, or throw away like 2 or 3000 in order to get the 1000 sets of perfect diecasts? Someday I would like to see one of those SOTS sets, perhaps at some future Smithsonian permanent Cars exhibit? No, they should display a set behind glass at Disneyland!!
(MET: I think it’s a sliding scale of pricing – cheaper/faster versus costlier/slower … it’s probably on the production form … in other words, you get what you pay for. π ).
SOTS is a misnomer. While watching the movie again today (once on Blu-Ray and twice more on ABC Family), I noticed the moniker on the stadium is actually MSS, not SOTS.
(MET: The 36-CAR Box Set is called Motor Speedway of the South)
Thanks Met, but I’m just saying that Pixar itself shortened the name to MSS, not SOTS.
Thanks guys and gal
Man-I-Fold, here is a bit of the History of the Motor Speedway of the South Set as told by John Ludwig at Hot Wheels a number of years ago –Thought you would find it interesting. Its in reply to a question about why the Set was so expensive.
BMW
I had to jump in on this as this was the last item I worked on before moving from HWC to MBX and then Tyco R/C here at Mattel. I know that this set is a little pricey for most, but if you make the investment I think you’ll be happy with what you get.
I know the CARS team can’t commit to what is and is not exlusive to the set, but chances are many of these cars won’t ever be released (no promises though).
This item came out of a meeting right before the CARS movie was released (like two years ago – there’s a long story maybe I’ll tell you if I see you at the Convention) and we were asked personally by John Lasseter (head guy at Pixar) to make a set that included all of the Piston Cup racers. It’s taken a long time to get it done, but I have to say this is one of the best sets HWC has ever made (even though it’s not even a HW set). Anyway, for those of you who remember me, I wanted to say “hello” and “thank you” for always being great supporters of the RLC.
Kudos to Mark and the rest of the team who have brought this set to life. If you like it, I hope you can get one.
Sincerely,
John (Ludwig)

I was able to add 2 to the cart and then add 2 again and so on so it is all in ONE order.
Please let me know if they mess up your order and instead deliver the dress we ordered for my daughter the other day. We need it by July 9.
John,
That is very funny, you are on a roll this week.
π
Does it say if theyll charge you now or when it ships out of curiosity?
there is two charges.
The first was a 1.00 test charge and then the balance when they ship.
Did it say when it would ship per chance?
Don’t mean to be nosey and all, but bills and me only wanting the rubber tires and Ramone.
Your not nosy.

Now will the caseses have all of the cars. The Kmarts near me are really lousy.
Lousy enough that I think I actually found cars from the last time still on pegs about a week ago.
We are going to make next Saturday a superCARrific Day!! π
We will start with a great breakfast so we have plenty of fuel in the tank to get us to lunch!
NEXT …. The K6 Cars party! We have hit the same Kmart each time for the last couple Kmart days, and we have always had a great time at the store. The employees do a good job and the other people there to get cars are very friendly. Everyone makes sure everyone else gets wht they need before they leave. Look forward to getting a poster, too!! π
After that, we will hit Mall for the Disney Store so we can pick up the third stamp in their Passports. While we are at the Mall, we will pit stop for lunch and a little playground action. π
The afternoon will wrap up with a MOVIE PARTY!!! Cars 2 Race around the world will begin!! Neither of my kids saw the original Cars movie in the theater, so THIS should be a MAGICAL!! π
On the car ride home we will talk about all of the AMAZING new things we saw, our favorite parts of the movie, and try to decide which car is everyone’s FAVORITE. When we hit home …. the Cars 2 Toy Vault will open and every one will get their FIRST Cars 2 Car …. well … cars …. many cars!!!!!!!!
I think after all of that, everyone will pass out for the night!! π
Can I come?!
Cars Convention!!!!!!
We’ll all be there! Hope there are enough duplicate Cars from your vault for everyone….
You betcha!
Carvention???
π
Great plan Jeff, very similar to the plan that we have only I have tried (and I say tried) to build in a nap after lunch so my little monkey will stay awake through the movie.
Also, I did find out what the DisneyStore prize is for having all 4 stamps, I think its worth building into your day.
OOOOOOH, you did, eh …. do tell … I promise not to tell anyone else π
Met, you forgot the FAQ that asks βDo I need to pay for the Cars that day?β. I swear at every event Iβve been to, someone walks by and thinks the Cars are free. The answer is βYes, you need to pay for the Cars.β

I’m not attending Kmart Cars Day #6 cause my Kmart isn’t open anymore sadly, and I’m seeing Cars 2 that day.
Last June, my son was 2 and they gave him one of the posters because no one was there. I have a feeling more people will be here this year because of the new movie. It also didn’t matter to them that none of the cars are first releases because people will only be coming because of the movie. We will only be going to get a poster. Cars 2 doesn’t start until 1:15 on Saturday so we will have plenty of time to kill to get one.
Due to the horrible selection, I’m going to disagree and say some stores will have zero turnout. …If a tree falls in Kmart and no one is there, will anyone hear it?
Then again, I was the one who was so adamant about the cases having 24 cars, so what do I know!
If the tree is one of those fake, plastic ones; there’s a good chance it won’t be heard.
If it’s a real tree, what kind is it? How big? Is it in the garden section? Is it one you can buy and take home or has the store been built around a live tree? We need all the facts.
