This is one reason not to get carried away by buying CARS before they actually get released because you have to separate out the seed from the banana …

I know some of you “Fillmore’s” out there are ready to scream, “it’s a conspiracy, man.”
“It’ll all be plastic for CARS 2!”
So, do you actually want the truth?
There will actually be an all plastic line for “discount stores,” meaning $.99 or $1 or around $1 – I’m not exactly sure – not a very full release, I think it’s only McQueen, Mater, Finn McMissile & Francesco Bernoulli … so before you panic … it’s NOT the 1:55 series which like now will be mostly metal. Of course, there’s not as much metal as we would like – but with the cost of labor & zinc going up … and in trying to keep it under $4 …something’s gotta give …
The plastic CARS actually look pretty nice, you can see some soft details here and there but not a bad deal for all plastic …
And really, I’m not making up the plastic line up, here’s the UPC: 7-46775-03867-0
But this is why you should wait on the official CARS – so you can separate out the diecasts from the not metal diecasts … aka: happy meal CARS. 🙂

I’m actually intrigued by the prospect of plastic CARS; I’ve taken a number of the plastic Disney Store CARS “figurines” and made them into slot cars. If these are around the same size (a bit smaller than 1:55), I’ll take a bunch! (The plastic Color-Changers are too big, unfortunately; the body will go over a slot car chassis, but the resulting CAR takes up more than one lane on the track.)
Still gonna get my share of the diecasts, too, of course! Has anybody else seen the video of the “lights-and-sound” 1:55 diecast Finn McMissile, LMQ & Holley Shiftwell?
Thanks, Met. That is great news that those Bernoullis floating around aren’t actual 1:55s. But, then again, who knows if the real FB will be any heavier…..
not collecting any of this stuff until I watch the film, cant see cars 2 being anywhere near as good as the original, (italian job springs to mind) plus I feel at this stage the movie is being merchandise led, so the jurys out at this stage
That’s not a bad looking Car for all plastic… still, like most others, I prefer metal in the 1:55 series… I got a Music Video Mater a few weeks ago and couldn’t believe how light it felt… it weighed 2.4 ounces, with those large attached plastic wings… I weighed my open Supercharged Mater – 3 ounces with no wings…

Pennies are 97.5% zinc. Each penny is 2.5 grams. There are 28.35 grams in an ounce. So 100 pennies contain 8.6 ounces of Zinc. I wonder how many Cars 2 cars a 100 pennies could make.
(I know I’m ignoring the whole logistic of costs associated with marketing, manufacturing and distribution and the legality of destroying currency)
