The Salazar Family: “Remembrance and Commitment”

Dennis D. “carscrazydd” asked me to pass this note along to everyone.

“From Dennis D./carscrazydd

As a Take5aDay.com member, I feel compelled to share my reactions to Met’s post about the Salazar family and request for help thru a donation.

Upon completing the reading of the post, I clicked over to Cars Cares and donated to the family fund. I was compelled to help as my 3 young girls and I had suffered a tragedy 24 years ago, the loss their mother/my wife and their 5 week old brother/my son.

There were many people who I did not know or ever talk to before our tragedy that donated to help us thru our troubled time, or sent many gifts for the girls at Christmas time for years to come. The first Christmas, there were so many presents that you could not enter the 12×14 room the tree was in, could not see the furniture, and could only see the top 3 feet of the 7 foot tree.

I did not know the Salazar family, other than from Met’s post that they were part of the T5AD family. No matter, people helped my family then and it was time for me to help them. I discussed the donation with my new wife, Kimberly. Together, we are committed to helping more and God willing, we will be sending as much as we can. We wish we could send much more, though we are limited by having alot of kids at home.

What matters to me and my wife is that the Salazar family knows they are in our hearts and prayers, and out in the world some people are wishing them well. The donated money is just to help manage things – but we all know it cannot heal sorrowed hearts.

Another reaction will be to Kevin/NascarBroncoFans Kmart CARS Day 4 “Challenge”. I have 5 sons at home and 6 grand-sons. I have collected 5 sets of all plastic tire racers re-leased on single card to date and 9 sets of all synthetic rubber tire racers released thru Kmart events. That’s 14 sets going, I still have 2 daughters at home and I have collected these to be able to give each of the boys a set upon completion.

We all know there are 8 racers in the Kmart case and I will need 9 sets of these to keep the collection going. I also need 5 racers to give to my 6 y.o. boy David, that some of you may have read about from time to time, as he has his own set of racers that he plays with.

I have e-mailed Kevin and committed to meet his “challenge” by donating 15 cents on each one of the 77 racers all of us boys will be rounding up at Kmart’s. (Apologies Kevin for the in-accurate amount of racers I will be purchasing, upon further review, David needs 3 more other than Dale Jr. and T. Juice, Sorry!) Also, as I don’t know whether or not once I give these sets away as gifts that they will or will not be sold, I am also meeting the challenge by sending extra to cover if they are sold.

I think that all of the Take5aDay.com family/Cars Cares and any and all friends who are involved in the organization of helping the Salazar family in their time of need are wonderful, deeply caring people and I must say “Thank You” and “God Bless You” to all.

I call out to all of the Take5aDay members/readers/etc. to, if you can – no matter how small you might think it matters, send the Salazar family a little help. A long list of people who sent donations re-assures the family it is not alone but surrounded by well-wishers, and truly that is the longest lasting help we can give. Our family will be sending more in addition to the challenge donation, please try to join us.”

Thank you Dennis for your words and thoughts.

I haven’t been able to get in here for a few days, I saw the post go up Saturday and since then it’s been non-stop. I keep wishing someone would invent cloan pills, not for long term use, just to make a valiant attempt at getting caught up.

Thank You Met and Company for posting this! You’re all at the top as far as I’m concerned!

Thank You Hostile Takeover Banker/mia, tia and njm/Indykjt and nascarfan for your replies.

Reminder: I will be getting some Kmart Cases for people overseas if they want them. I will not be buying any extras. Each case ordered I will donate 1.00 to Cars Cares Salazar Family Fund, and then 1.00 again when your case ships out to you overseas. You will recieve an email copy of the donations made in your name.

I will be closing the buyers list at 12 midnight May 16th, 2010

I have exchanged emails with Rick last year before for SDCC items and after. He seems to be a great guy. I hope this helps.

    Dennis, powerful letter bud.

I lost a fiancee in June of 1986 to a drunk driver. Cant tell you how that affects a person.

  • Indykjt says:

I couldn’t have put into words any better than what Dennis did above, the feelings about why we should all be stepping up to help the Salazar family.

It’s not about how much money you can send, but the fact that you are stepping up for someone that needs the show of support in a time of need.

I have not said much about this topic since I have learned of the details, as up until now, Nascarfan and Met have said all that needs to be said. I want to say how much this story personally affected me. I have never met Rick, outside of a few email communications in the past. But reading about what his family is experiencing has moved me in a way that has been eye opening.

I have a wonderful wife that I have been married to for nearly 14 years, and two children, ages 5 and 11. I can not begin to imagine what would happen to our lives should we lose the rock of our family.

Now, take a look at those around you in your life, and put this whole thing into perspective. It’s not hard to see why coming together like this will (and has) make a huge impact on someone you may have never met.

As the Kmart event challenge draws near, I want to remind everyone that every little bit helps. The donations received so far have now reached over $600, thanks in no small part to the nearly 30 individuals that have donated. But, if everyone here stepped up to Nascarfans Kmart challenge, that total would skyrocket.

I am committed to helping a family in our collecting community… are you?

  • mia, tia and njm says:

I believe we can all “pay it forward” because at some time or another we have all received help of some kind. Maybe we haven’t experienced the tragedies of these families but we’ve all had our own struggles. I feel privileged to be able to help in some small way. I hope others have too.

  • Hostile Takeover Banker says:

A lovely letter. Come one everyone if you haven’t already got behind this good cause.
