Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Oversized, Megasized Or Deluxe?

A rose by any other name?

A large CAR by any other name?

In late 2008, the “oversized” line was launched which was good …

As there was clearly some CARS in CARS WORLD that are larger than your average Piston Cup racer. (If you want to quibble about scale in the oversized, you can go back to read this old post).

But OVERSIZED as a designation was also confusing to both audiences of CARS.

To the average person, when you say OVERSIZED, they think it’s ‘larger’ than normal. Which is true in one sense (VISUALLY) for some of the oversized line releases but it’s not really apparent – Lightning Storm McQueen is not really ‘larger’ in the normal description sense because most people do not count the rockets as making him larger because the CAR itself is pretty much Dinoco McQueen (which is the same size as every other McQueen). While Marco the Jet and the Blimp are clearly larger than normal CARS (but in reality, NOT accurate to scale of CARS World).

For the average diecast collector, OVERSIZED is also a bit confusing as they normally think of oversized as meaning another line DIFFERENT in scale.

So, while people could figure out, called it the OVERSIZE line was more confusing than it needed to be …

So, it was not a tragedy when Mattel started imprinting the word MEGA SIZE on the cards …

Mega Size is not a bad word since it holds no real meaning – MEGA is a meaningless word in a comparison and scale sense other than it bigger than big but less than ginormous … for what that’s worth. 🙂

But now MackDaddy has found at least three Mater Tall Tales megasize cards where it does not say MEGA SIZE but DELUXE.

The “Buck the Tooth Vendor” MEGA SIZE card and now, the DELUXE version …

There are three possible answers …

1) This is merely a packaging variant ploy just as some of the single cards have a NEW snipe and others say something like SIZZLIN’ PAINT JOB. Some will say DELUXE while others will read MEGA SIZE.

2) They are switching over because the felt that some CARS were simply “smaller” (though still more girth, height or width than ‘normal,’  unlike the Elvis RV or the Blimp, as with Buck the Tooth Vendor above, hardly MEGA SIZED in most people’s eyes – that DELUXE says it better – that they weren’t overselling or overpromising …

3) They are switching over just because they thought DELUXE says it better.

But as of right now, it’s hard to tell since the regular MEGA SIZE line (CASE Q) all reads MEGA SIZE. So, maybe it’s just for the Mater Tall Tales and it’s Reason #1 – just for kicks and of course, to double sales to completists.

(the collector’s guide still says MEGA SIZE though it was probably printed 4 months ago).

So, MackDaddy, thanks for the DELUXE pics – we’ll have to see if it’s just a MEGA ploy or it’s DELUXE, DELOVELY and DELIGHTFUL.

Of course, it did get me thinking that English can be confusing as while Luxe = luxury, adding the DE does not mean the “removal of,” or “reverse,” of Luxe … but rather something that is more than just Luxe …

Met covered the Daredevil variations in a previous post. There is a Daredevil coming with flames instead of fuses as well.

Has anybody noticed the Daredevil Mcqueen single has teeth in the picture but the car has no buck teeth. But if you can get the version with teeth in the box set.

    We all know the reason.

#1. This is merely a packaging variant ploy just as some of the single cards have a NEW snipe and others say something like SIZZLIN’ PAINT JOB. Some will say DELUXE while others will read MEGA SIZE.

This is all really starting to affect the midwest as I routinely see the new Final Lap cars and chase googlies sitting on the shelves for weeks on end. I think they have tapped the market here, and people are done collecting because of the b/s antics. Just think… we don’t even get that much inside scoop anymore here (no offense to the all knowing MET) b/c they have switch the exclusive distribution to Target where we have never had inside spies. It is all now just wait and see on case assortments, allotments, etc…. You all just wait until Kmart day 4 when they release the racers as lenticulars, and the collectors walk out without the boxes they otherwise would have purchased.

  • I want an in scale Marco and Dinoco helicopter.
and 1:18th scale Cars, not just 1:24 scale.
And Darth Mater and a SOTS and and an and and and evrything else..twice..

  • todd says:

the new cases in my area of NC have all got deluxe on them

  • BMW says:

New – no New. Megasize – Deluxe. Yes, lots of collectors were sucked into this back with the Walmart 8 then the WOC versions. chase cars – Confetti, no confetti.

Some completists will continue to collect them all.

Just no longer important to me anymore. Glad I switched over to first on card, its much easier. Only if the car is a true variant and not the packaging any more. I did get the Impound Snot Rod with confetti. But won’t continue down this course. Mattel marketing you can keep changing the tags, but not everyone is going to buy because of a word change.

Bessie’s packaging also says “Deluxe” so they are changing over to this. I sure hope people collect these for fun and the joy of owning them and not as an investment…these are just toys.

  • PirateDad says:

    NExt….

    Special?
    Pimpin’?
    Woo HOO?
    Wicked Sized?
    MegaLux?

  • buckland-blowouts says:

Well this Completist is done with all the packaging variations… Too much for too long and unfortunately not much value in the long run…

    At least I think and /or hope…

Not much value in my wallet as well…

I still love to get different variations of the actual cars themselves…

And we are still lookin’ for that Matty Punchin’ bag… That’s one that will get some use out of for sure!

  • Kevin W says:

It should have said “Mega Price”

  • I-am-speed says:

MEGA should only apply when you’re talking about pieces of art like Disney Store FRANK! That’s MEGA size!

I really, really, really hope that the Disney Stores will have their own version of Bessie!

Are you listening, Disney Store? 🙂
