Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: The Ultimate Guide to Kmart CARS Day 3 – October 17, 2009
What is it again?
This Saturday (October 17, 2009) at 11:00 AM, Kmart’s around the country will be selling SEVEN exclusive Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS with “rubber” tires that are ONLY available at Kmart.
Here is your checklist. It’s the CARS on the left in full color – the CARS available ONLY at the last event are grayed out.
So, how exactly does this procedure work?
At around 10:30-10:59 AM (your local time), they will start handing out numbered tickets. They are either available at the customer service desk or they will set up a small table by the toy section.
Each Kmart store has been shipped a number of boxes (there are 24-CARS in each box this year … case assortment listed towards the end of this post). The actual boxes per store will vary and there is no set number.
At 11:00 AM, they will start drawing numbers by the table in the toy section. It is a random draw so just because you show up an hour early or 2-minutes before it starts, it’s supposed to be random. Don’t let the store try to tell you it’s by line-up order.
When your number is selected, you will have 5-minutes to select 5 CARS to purchase. They are $3.99 each plus tax.
You can do quick math on the number of people versus the number of Piston Cup racers. Of the 24 CARS in each case, there are 19 Piston Cup racers – so if your store gets 12 CASES, there will be 228 Piston Cup racers available and only the 46th person will not get a chance to buy 5 Piston Cup racers – mathematically – in reality, it’s a crapshoot if you really draw 46 as to what you get a chance to look at or buy.
And then?
In a perfect scenario, there are more boxes available than people so you will get to go again and again. In other scenarios and cities where there are more people than boxes, you can only hope to get a low number but don’t worry too much – many TakeFivers (when they are not insulting each other) will take time out to trade or sell with you.
And like any chance thing – you might chose a Kmart with hardly anyone there or you might be at the Kmart with 100 people and 16 boxes so do the math. Look to see how many people there are and that there are 19 Piston Cup racers per box.
But you never know, some people might draw is happy to buy 2 CARS – or some kid was super excited to buy a Dinoco McQueen so you never know.
Ticket Distribution Issues
The process seems pretty straightforward. You ask for a ticket, they give you one but believe it or not, it gets fouled up. The rules are pretty specific – ‘every person who is capable of reaching for a ticket is entitled to one.’ This would seem to imply pretty much anyone older than 6-months … but there are some stores that will hand them to anyone and others who are so restrictive they will only try to hand them to one member of the a family (if you are paranoid – split up the family and avert each others eyes – no hugging or kissing 🙂 ). Again, the rule above is the official Kmart corporate policy. If you think you might have problems, you can go back to a 2008 post and print out the memo.
When Should You Get to the Store?
In 98% of the stores, it’s an orderly process – they hand out tickets until about 10:59 AM and it’s a RANDOM drawing so you might still be breathing hard as you raced in and get #2 or you should up early and draw #27 … the official procedure says it’s a random drawing so do not let them try and convince you it’s line-up by time. But I would definitely try to show up at least 15-minutes ahead of time as there have been one or two stores that jumped the gun and start selling before 11 AM.
Buying Limit
The official policy is 5 CARS until your number is drawn again or in many stores, when there are more boxes than people, then people can start buying more.
The Pre-Sale
In case you missed it, on 9/27 & on 10.2 – there were FULL SEALED FACTORY cases available for $95.76 and contained the following assortment …
This is the case assortment that stores will be getting – of course, there’s no guarantee that it’s 100% accurate for 100% of the cases as we discovered last time.
Coupons?
You betcha. First, there is a special TakeFiveADay coupon – banner link above (it’s in the rotation so if you don’t see it at the top of the hit, tab to your browser url bar and hit SHIFT RETURN to refresh & reload the page and the Kmart ad should show up, please click on it to support TakeFive – thanks!)
The coupon can appear confusing because the name the retailers (and Mattel) call the singles line is “CARS CHARACTER VEHICLE ASSORTMENT” while to the AVERAGE SHOPPER, when you says CARS assortment, you might mean ANY CARS item but this coupon is good for any CARS item other than the singles … and Kmart has been re-stocking other CARS items including the Mater Tall Tales items (LLC-20 points out that Kmart has the best deal on the MTT 4-packs at $14.99 and on the Tractor Tippin’ game) … the coupon has a UPC code that is covered up but will ring in the register as any CARS item other than $3.99 singles … so this coupon is worth anything from $.59 to $4.00 depending on what CARS item you choose.
And there is a $5 off if you buy $50 coupon.
Is My Kmart Participating?
In theory, every Kmart is participating but you can call to check. We have a spreadsheet HERE that lists every Kmart store – however this list is now a year old so a particular store may have closed or might have been rebranded as Sears. Call to verify!
Sears?
Yes, Sears & Kmart are now owned by the same investment company so if you do not live near a Kmart, check out your Sears store if they have a toy section – many if not all the Sears stores that have a toy section (or was formerly a Kmart) might get these CARS but instead of a special day or event, they will simply put them out so you can actually start checking today as they should have received the boxes already and may have already put them out. 😉
Or of course, just buy them at Target in the wacky Final Lap Wacky Packing Collection …
See you at the Big K on Saturday. Remember to send in photos as the Sun moves across the sky and we here on the West Coast will have the last start to the event so send in pics and stories as the fun begins …
4 hours, 22 minutes and counting…
happy cars day 3..only 10 more hours for us east coasters woooooooo go big K
I stopped by one of our Kmarts today and the manager checked his backroom and informed me that they had 4 Master cases – each case has 4 regular cases inside so we’re looking at 16 cases or 384 cars at this store alone. Considering that at the last event it was just me, 2 of my kids, and one other family, I would hope that our odds are good to pick up anything we need tomorrow.
Hope everyone has a great time tomorrow!
(MET: So, don’t come back with less than 192 CARS).
WOW!! Sounds like things will go well for you and yours! 🙂
Looks Great!!! Does anyone know if the MTT singles count as cars singles and are excluded from the coupon offer??
Kmart cars day 2 I found the cars (OR most of them) at Sears but this time i didnt and now they have the toy section for Christmas
My family and I came across a case of the Kmart Cars Day 3 at the Mattel Store today! We were able to get 2 sets of the rubber tires racers, and best part was they were all 40% off!
Cool!!! 8)
Can’t wait till tomorrow… Want another Vinyl Toupee… LOL 😀 Yay!
To steal a catch phrase from Hill Street Blues and use it regarding Saturday’s big event:
“Let’s be careful out there!”

Any other takefivers going to the K-Mart in Winter Springs, FL, on Tuskawilla Rd?
I asked the Customer Service lady today if they were doing the Cars event tomorrow and the best she could come up with was, “How would I know? I don’t work weekends.” So I asked if there was someone else I could ask and she said she just paged the toys person to the electronics.
So I tracked the toys lady down and asked her. She said she had a bunch of boxes for something tomorrow but didn’t know any details. And then she explained she doesn’t work weekends.
This will be the first time I’ve gone to a K-Mart Cars event and I’m hoping for a good experience.
(MET: Hopefully someone will work on the weekend).
First thing when you get there is to ask if/where they’re handing out tickets for the CARS event, then ask WHERE in the store they’re holding the event. You might get that stare of “what are you talking about”, keep asking until someone knows.
One additional word of caution: the Hot Wheels event always takes place at 9:00am, and I’ve heard in the past that some stores hold the Cars event at that hour too. So you might make sure you stop by at 8:45 or so just to be safe.
How about a combined Hot Wheels/CARS Day event?
There might be some fur flying that day!
Oh man, there would be an all-out riot that day! Could you imagine some old dude getting his ticket drawn for a Cars case? There would be heck to pay for sure!
At the last event here, they even gave out a second round of tickets once the first round was done because everyone (and there were A LOT of people) was still there after the first round! But despite the fact that there are tons of people at my store, everyone behaves (for the most part) and still seem to get what they want. I wonder if there will be a poster this time?
We have 8 Kmarts here and none of them pull tickets. We walked in one on 2 days and there was a master case and 3 cases on top of that and a table full. Know where we are starting this time. Then have another 7 to hit.
The whole family is looking forward to tomorrows event!! It has been great both times, the people are nice and everyone seems to leave happy!! 🙂
They do none of that at our the Kmart I go to. At 11:00, they just start dumping all the cases into plastic bins on a couple tables and tell everyone to keep back. After they are done unloading, they tell everyone to step up to the tables. Then they do a 5 second countdown and everyone has at it. Everyone is always nice about it though – no shoving or yelling or anything. It always goes real smooth, and there’s plenty leftover afterwards.
WOW! That sounds like it could be very interesting!!
That would turn into a full blown riot here.
Another good thing about this way is that everyone’s done and out of there by 11:15 too!
I keep hoping there is an accidental insertion of a new Pitty or a new Final Lap Car tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear everyone’s reports!
I’m hoping that too!
Ah, the eternal optimist. I love that about you.
I was in a Sears about three weeks ago and they had all of the Cars from the second K-mart Collector’s Day plus Todd (Pizza Planet) and Patti! I was so excited because had I missed out on that event. was not even looking for them, but when I went to pay for a Lightning McQueen shirt for my son I saw a toy display. They were on a VERY small toy display mixed in with mostly girl toys to the right of the register. There weren’t many CARS, and I bought almost all of them. Good luck to everyone tomorrow, but remember if you can’t go hope is not lost, just check a Sears!!
I was away for the last event, and won’t be able to get to my Kmart until later tomorrow, but I went A FULL WEEK after the last event, and they still had at least one (if not more) of all the cars (including Tod & Patty), so I should be okay tomorrow, and will post if they have plenty – am happy to scoop up extras & offer at cost or trade to other Take 5’ers. (Also my favorite candy bar, BTW…)
There is a candy bar called Take5?? I NEED THAT!!!
Hershey’s could be the next sponsor……..
I’ve been a Hershey bar fanatic for my whole life, and when I went to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls about 9 years ago, I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the Hershey store.
I expected it to be like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, but when I went inside, the highlight was filling a bag with Hershey’s Kisses. The whole place was just t-shirts, coffee mugs, and stuff like that. Maybe I need to go to Hershey, PA to experience the real deal.
On a similar note, who here’s been to M&M World in Las Vegas? THAT is one cool place!
That Hershey store sells Recipe Boxes with Hershey engraved on them…I made those, they are one of my customers and are a HUGE P.I.T.A!!!
I LIVE only a couple hours from Hershey and have never been there…maybe I should go…
Our store in Utah hands out tickets as you arrive
Looking forward to the event. If you are going to the Chula Vista KMart, see you there 🙂
Is that like Chula Joe Jackson?
Silly John!!! 😉 Chula Vista is in the southern San Diego area!!
Chula Vista is the home of the Blue Bombers the current Little League World Champions, woot!
With bells on! (ok, not really) but I am sure it will be a good time, can’t wait!
See ya there Glenn 🙂
We loved last time and can’t wait for tomorrow. Question: The MTT 4 packs are 14.99 at Kmart????? I bought a couple a week or 2 ago and they were 21 or 22.99. Are they on sale? Do they do price adjustments?
I paid $22.99 for mine at TRU, then Target got them and I paid $17.99. If my Kmart has them tomorrow I am gonna get them there and return the Target ones.
I got one set at TRU for 22.99 and another at Kmart that was the same price. That’s why I’m confused about the 14.99. Are they just on sale right now?
most places will only do a price adjustment with in 7 to 10 days . . . you will probably have to return them and re-buy them! 🙂
Yes, the regular price is $22.99 at our stores, they’re on sale for $14.99…..a fantastic price, but even better if you use the 10% coupon tomorrow!
Is there any list of what Sears might be participating?
I’m on Kmart’s email list, and got this link yesterday. You can choose either Kmart or Sears Essentials (or both) in your search. Good luck!

Can’t wait for these racers! Although, I will be at work, on my birthday no less… so I will be relying on friends to help me out!
Good luck to everyone, and I hope everyone gets what they want!
Do you already have someone lined up to go for you? If you dont give me an email, lranslam at verizon.net
There are a couple fellow Hoosier collectors that will be attending, and hopefully getting a few extra sets for me!
Thank you for the offer!!!
My Kmart has had fewer people than cases for each of the last 2 Cars events, but they still strictly follow the rules, and do the random drawing for 5 Cars. I’m hoping tomorrow goes the same.
ours was the same way last time. there were only 5 people i think and at least 18 cases so they were very by the book and made us go one at a time by drawing the number and did it that way until all 18 cases were opened and then after that you could pretty much just get whatever you wanted
When we went to Kmart Day 1, there were 3 families and 3 master cartons. I asked the Kmart employee if we could just each go through a master carton, but like I sadi, he followed the rules. 🙂
Good luck All!
