The first time I had ever heard of a Disney Store was in 1990, when one opened at Fashion Valley in San Diego, CA, while we were on vacation.

Of course, within several years, Disney Stores had begun to be seen all over the place. I think I could go to 4 different malls in the San Diego area when I was on vacation in the 90’s.

We were originally from Iowa, and then some years later when one opened in Des Moines and later in Cedar Rapids, we’d go to those frequently.

One of my most memorable item was a shirt themed to The Lion King, that showed that one opening shot of the sun-struck mountain with animals moving in the mist during the ‘Circle of Life’ number, with “The Lion King” in blue stitching across the image. I wore that to my first showing of ‘The Lion King’ that summer.

These days, I can’t really find much reason to make a purchase at the Disney Store. If they had something like say…exclusives merchandise from PIXAR’s store on their Emeryville Campus, then maybe I’d drop some money.

Steve Jobs teaming up with disney store, umm I can’t imagine that, afterall he is only the largest share holder in Disney. He has more stock than any of the Disney family. When did that happen, oh when they bought out Pixar which he owned. If I remember correctly he owns somewhere around 7% of disney now. There is your obvious reason that Icar even exists since in 2006 Pixar was still owned by Jobs. To me the notion is kind of scary that they are using him, disney stores could end up looking like an Apple store, stark white with hardly any merchandise. I have a feeling we could have the IDisney in our future, what will it be who knows.

BS! Disney abandoned the mall store concept and sold off the stores to another company. That company destroyed Disney in the malls. When Disney took over the remaining stores, it canvassed each and every store. There is one store left in Washington State-Alderwood Mall. The stores in Tacoma Mall, South Hill Mall, South Center, Seattle, you name all were closed because Disney couldn’t make as much money as possible. Then there’s the mall operators, who were looking to maximize their bucks by gouging Disney on the rent. The malls around here abandoned the concept of having a well balanced mix of retail stores to attract everybody. It ain’t working! Just about every mall has a high turnover and empty store fronts. Additionally, the remaining Disney stores are limited in product selection. Gone is anything related to an adult taste.

There is absolutely no indication Disney is going to reenter the mall occupancy market. Talks cheap!

Anyone here from Southern New Jersey? I was passing time in the West Deptford Mall last week and was in what appeared to be a VERY NEW Disney store. Perhaps someone could pass along photos to get a sense of the place. I wonder if it represents what is to come?
The store has a bright “boutique-like” feeling. The Disney stores in Northern Jersey still have the old design with movie screens in the back and large hard-plastic characters all around the store ceiling.

Well I used to live there, and that was my closest mall, but lets see the last time I was in there was probably 1992. I can tell you there wasn’t one there back then. I would actually love to go back to that mall that would be one long trip down memory road there.
