Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: DPCI Target CARS Day … Sort Of
One of the worst kept secrets that Target is clearly planning on a large CARS endcap or reset on October 11, 2009.
There are a couple key thing to know and understand. Yes, the CARS are marked DO NOT FLOOR BEFORE 10.11.2009 but that is ONLY an agreement between the manufacturer and the retailer. If you as a consumer call and they bring them out to you, it is NOT ILLEGAL in any manner for you to buy them. The SHELVE BY-FLOOR DATES are only a ‘suggestion-recommendation-request.’ Some manufacturers take it very seriously and will punish retailers by delaying or not shipping future products but that is very, very rare anyone is “punished” and frankly, no toy company would have the guts to “punish” Walmart, Target or TRU …unlike say a theater is not supposed to start showing a movie until Friday and risks the studio not letting them show the next blockbuster movie. With toys, how exactly are you going to punish a retailer that would just as soon give your peg space to potato chips? Or in the case of Target, just leave the peg space empty so there really is no penalty and certainly the bottom line is – if a customer asks for something, why exactly are we not selling it them? So the pegs look prettier in 15 days? Because unlike the book or DVD retail where Tuesday is the agreed upon release date – there is rarely a agreed promotions date – even when Walmart launched the return of CARS with their pallet in 2007 with a nice position in their supplement – the appearance of the CARS was all over the board all over the country.
The bottom line is for books, movies & videogames, everyone agrees on a sell date – for toys and most other items in the store, it’s just a suggestion between the retailer & the manufacturer – you as a consumer have every right to buy anything they have on the shelf or if they are willing to bring to you as long as you pay for it.
Why – because for toys – Walmart & Target have a launch date BUT it is up to discretion of that store to display it whenever & where-ever. Yes, there is a planogram and a general plan but with toys (unlike some household products), the manager-section stocker, etc … decides when to put it out. Sometimes it’s when they have most of the items of that new planogram, it goes out – other times, it goes out early because they need the room. Other times, it goes late because no one cares or it’s behind a giant stack of bleach … so presuming CARS will get a mention in the Sunday flyer on 10.11.2009 or maybe even a big sale so the goal is to have it all ready by 10.11.2009 but it will all depend. If there is a specific sale, the store will obviously try and get it out so they don’t have to issue rainchecks but of course if the disclaimer says, “Subject to availability. No rainchecks,” then all bets are off. In either case, we should start seeing CARS on the shelf by midweek leading up to 10.11 as they are not going to be clogging the aisles stocking Saturday.
So if you have called to ask about the CARS you want, then check in next week or so as more CARS should start appearing on your shelves at Target.

Based on some of the pricing, it would seem they are going on sale for a week starting 10.11.2009 but it’s hard to say at this point until we get the ad that Sunday.
It also looks like Storytellers are arriving but so far, stores are ONLY reporting in Storyteller 1.0 CARS from last – still assembling the case assortment so will post soon.

Sounds like Target was a bust today. Didn’t make it… cranky baby.
Can anyone tell me the Target price of the Crew Chief/Pitties 4-packs? Trying to decide if I want to pay ebay prices.
$19.99 is what I paid today.

No luck in Spokane, WA. My son and I went to two Targets (Spokane Valley & North Spokane), but there was nothing on the floor. At N. Spokane they looked for additional inventory and there was nothing. We might hit Cour D’Alane after nap time.
If anyone else spots these in Spokane please let me know.

Finally found the final lap cars in Lowell. Thanks to the above post, did not even know about that lowell. Went to three others in Woburn, MA, Salem, NH and Methuen, MA and they had nothing and wouldn’t bring them out. They said they could be any day during the week. The Lowell store has the haulers on sale for $8.99 too.
no luck on October 11 in Orlando, FL. Went to 3 stores (Goldenrod, Waterford and Oviedo) and walked away with a Nitroade Hauler.
I don’t see any Cars in the new Target add.

I was so excited that they had every DCPI # in back BUT I went with the FL singles and to my dismay they were 4.99 each!!?? What the? I am hoping the price will be adjusted down .. anyone know abut this?
I think it was because everyone was complaining about McQueen being in every box, so they changed the package, painted his rear black and up the price… Yea.. $4.99 is now wayyyyyyyyyy out on a limb!!!! and for them to NOT be 99% Die Cast, but more and more plastic!
Kmart beats target and walmart to case A.
i also went to the target in my town and was told that they had both the crew chief case and the final lap case in the back they were more than happy to bring them out. However, when they brought the final lap case out it had already been picked through and there were no new cars left. we did get the crew chief sets there though. then we called another target in our area and i was told by the guy in toys that they had 18 of that dpci in the back but that there were cars out on the shelf an he would NOT bring them out for me to look at. i was a little shocked by that because he was really pretty rude in how he said it!!! so i called a few more targets in my area and was told that the one i had called and the one i had gone to and was already picked over were the only ones that had them in. so i had to call in a little muscle..(my husband) he seems to be a lot more persuasive than i am..lol! he called and asked for the manager and explained what had happened when i had called earlier and she said she would be happy to go and check and see if they had them and they did so she held them at the front desk for us!!!so thanks for the info!! hope everyone else has help finding theres too..
Thanks guys!!!! I took the numbers to target and checked with a stocker on the floor and she checked the final lap and pitty crew boxes and they had them in stock. I got one set of each and left the rest on the racks for any lucky collector to pick up. I had no problem with them looking for it and they were happy to assist, so guys dont be shy and ask for them by number and even though i spent alot of money it was well worth it. She also found a fiber fuel launcher and a mood springs launcher for me. So for anyone in the Baldwin Park, CA area the Target on Citrus off the 10 has these cars on the rack waiting for you. Thanks TFAD for all your help and efforts.

Also We found us some over-sized Mater tales ambulance and fire truck in the wilds of Zellers – But they were in every other aisle than the one we thought they should be in… Thank God mommy was tryin’ on clothes and we were stuck in the toy section ith nothin’ else to do but HUNT!!!
It also says that item location is Australia. Well pigs bloody ring. I sent these FW’s a question and lo behold it comes back and has the location as China!
Not only is the item a fake but their bloody location is as well.

My almost local Target hasn’t received anything new in months. However, my local Wal-Mart just put out the Cars Toons and of which I only needed the Orderly Pittys and Cannonball Mater which I almost did not get as they said “not on file”
I was at Target today and gave the guy the DCPI number and he told me he had them in the back to hold on…
He came back with an 18 piece box with Blowing Bubbles Mater, Skip Richter, Rad Spgs MQ, and three each of Rubber Tires Octane Gain and Leakless. CRAZY! I think there was a brand-new mater in there too… skipped on him. Anyway… this was the second Target I asked if they had them… the first one told me that I had to wait until Oct. 11.

I gave them the final lap number… and those cars just happened to be in TWO of the three targets I checked.
Today I went to target and the box I had didn’t have any Blowing Bubble Maters in it but had 6 Pollys. Want to trade?
just saw that you all replied…. sorry for the delay… found a few more octane gain’s in another final lap box today… once again… no polly’s! The skew number on them did not work, so the guy charged me $4.99 each. Not sure what to do with them.
Was able to find a few polly in another box at another Target. I really want new mater’s Tall Tales…. high dive, aviator, and lug and nutty.
By the way… I am in Phx, AZ too… forgot to tell you that before.
So much for 10-11-09 as Target won’t have any to put out. Boy somebody is going to blow a fuse on that day in target headquarters. 8)
Or, maybe being a more “glass half full” type of outlook, maybe that same person at headquarters will do an inventory at day’s end, see that they have all sold out, and immediately place tons of orders for more of the new Cars!
I don’t know what the big deal is about the Oct 11 date (and moe, this is not directed towards you in particular). Isn’t the whole point of these launch dates to generate interest and get people to come to the stores to spend their money on Cars and other items? I for one am doing both at Target which should keep them happy.
And if the collectors here do not pick up these Cars, you will just have a bunch of resellers plowing in there on 10-11 and buying up their inventory at 8:01 am and all those other people who read the ad and came in will be just as ticked off.
(MET: A set date would be fine if all the stores adhered to it. I’m cool with the Harry Potter only available on X day or a DVD only available starting on a Tuesday or even closer to home, Kmart managers are told to lock up the CARS (of course, there are some problems but 99% compliance is pretty good) but Target doesn’t try all that hard and you can argue that’s good or bad but the bottom line is they believe for the most part, if a customer asks for it, I will sell it to you. Is your money different than the guy who races in at 9 AM on 10.11 and throws everything into a cart? And I should point that unlike a Harry Potter book or a DVD release where a store gets 200, 500 or 1,000 copies? As long as you come within a few hours, you’re pretty much set (at worst, right?) but with CARS? They are clearly not going to get 200 Blowing Bubbles Mater so if you want one … you have to be more proactive. We’re not advocating anything illegal or of questionable ethics. No mis-marking coupons or even anything remotely like that, all people are doing is picking up the phone and asking, “Do you have this – can you hold it for me.” In fact, Target even leaves all the scanner/inventory control machines out in the open for anyone to see if they have inventory).
Anyone else been at TRU when they open after people find out they’re getting in a truck with Zhu Zhu Pets?
I was almost trampled by a handful of women that were already at the door when I got there 10 minutes before opening…..they were all after the “accessory” items that go with the pets.

I for one went and got the Target cars the other day. I was just commenting that when they go to put these out on the 11th they won’t have any. I had no problems getting them except for 1 store and I just went and asked another young guy there and he went back and got them and the old lady I asked before him wouldn’t do it and said these were collectors item and a special release date of the 11th. You just always find someone else and they will do it. it seems there is no set employee for a department, anyone of them will go back and get them for you, just have to find the right person is all.
I went to Target today with the DCPI’s and was told that even though they were in the back room (waiting for the 11th) they could sell them to me because I asked for them. The employee who was helping me even checked with the Mattel rep that just happened to be there at the time. So I guess tomorrow I’ll go back with the # for the RQ Mater singles since I still need some of those.
I will say though that maybe it makes a difference if you have your kids with you; how can they deny cute little faces?
thats good to know that if you ask for them they can sell them to you…. maybe me & zach might head out the the next closest target about 10 miles out tomorrow morning…hmm… they told me they have them in the back but not out yet too, so hopefully they are still in the back and i can be the first one to get in the case!
still so sad/mad at target! we went to the other one this morning (where i called they other day and they said they have 2 boxes of them in the back but i cant get them till the 11th) and i asked this girl int he toy dept to look up the dpci, she did said it had no location, so i asked her if shw would mind checking in the back and she told me if it didnt have a location, that meant they didnt have it, she wouldnt even go look 🙁 What a waste of an early morning trip!
Just go find another employee and if they won’t find another one. You will eventually get them. I was at 1 Target and they had signs up saying they wouldn’t get out collectors items at the diecast line and I went to the food department and asked a girl there and low and behold she walked out of the back with the cases in hand. I smiled and said Thank You and walked away to pay!!
check K-Mart for the Rescue Squad Mater singles. I had previously only found Burnt LMcQ at TRU, the rest were gone. But I just found the rest of them at K-Mart yesterday. They had a bunch, 2 full pegs. ALso K-Mart & WM both had the Burnt Cannonball Maters, along with all of the Megas in that case. WM had 2 full pegs of these.
i went to 2 kmarts yesterday and they had 2 full cases.. as well as tru ! 🙂 and tru had the new pitties 🙂
ugh, im so mad at my target! I called yesterday to hav them check the dpci # and they said they have it but cant bring it out before the 11th, and we go in today and i stopped by the check the cars aisle and FOUND FINAL LAP CARS OUT! of course all they had left were the radiator springs mcqueen, king & doc. I was so MAD!! lol. So i found a really helpful guy, and he checked the backroom, and they dont have anymore 🙁 so hopefully they will get mroe in soon!

Is Target just getting the first round of the Rescue Squad Mater cars or do you think they might get case B for the 4pks & singles? If so, a little late. I think it has been easier to find some of these because they are more expensive. I need to be on the lookout for the Chick Pitty set, because the Targets I went to only had Dinoco & Leakless.
(MET: I would think they are carrying them and especially throughout the holiday season – but if they order them like they do singles cases … yea, give us 25,000 cases of the Trunk Fresh Pitt case and then nothing … so as always, what is true today might not be tomorrow).

i just found a lonely View Zeen single at my local tesco in the cereal asiel! he was amoung cone sally and the flag guy! 2 cars i havnt seen before,
on another asile i found a nitroade, full metal mater, race offical tom, tow and big size fred, all of which i havnt seen in ages!
there wernt ROR or supercharged,
imma gunna keep my eye out for the other racers!
another good thing, ViwZeen didnt ring up at the till and the check out lady asked me how much they usualy are, i said about £3 (they are about £3.90) and she rang it up as £2.99! hehe

It would seem that the excess Kmart 1 cars are being disposed of on the ‘sidekicks’ in Tesco’s at the moment. Not found any myself yet, but looking at eBay there seem to be all 5 of the Kmart 1 racers. They have a different type of hook at the top, so it is possible to identify the ones that are from Tesco. Keep your eyes peeled!
I went to the service desk at our nearest Target, very nicely asked the girl at the counter to check the DPCI number(for the Team Crew sets) that I’d handed to her. She said that it showed “in stock”, located in the back room. She called for someone in back, he said he’d find it, then he brought the case to the front desk. They opened it, I checked everything over, and told her I’d take them all. No problem.
Oh, and all of the pittys are correct. No “all wide pittys”, or anything like that.
Ten minutes, when TRU opened, I found 4 Sarge’s Boot Camp sets fresh out of the box…….no paint issues on any of them! I can’t believe how BIG the SUVs are!

What works: Going into a Target with the DPCI#’s, plugging them into the scanner and if it says “Backroom YES” locate a friendly clerk to help you. I don’t see why they wouldn’t want to sell you a product. They are not locked out of the register and they are considered ‘Active’ Merchandise at Target now so you would be able to purchase them if they were nice enough to get them from the back! Good luck!
You’re right about the Storytellers. I went to two Targets and gave them the Storytellers DPI and they both brought out case 1.0. Needless to say I was disappointed. I really want Flo’s Show Girls.

Not turning my nose up at the Storytellers. It’s just that I already have the first releases and am anxious to get the second round of releases. You were lucky to get them at such a good price. 🙂
My TGT was showing 16 Storytellers in stock and I think I broke every law imaginable getting there only to find out they are last year’s models. 🙁

I just stumbled into K-MART, (huge display), in Missouri and they had GIL, Nitroaide trailers, and all of Mater Tall Tale Case A available. Even found a Frank. Then I jumped over to TRU and found the shelves fully stocked with the Rescue Squad singles and four packs. A TRU employee stated that the Rescue Squad singles will be 2 for $6.99 this Sunday. (If they last that long)….SCORE!!!
Our Kmart was fully stocked with Mater Tall Tales ($4.49) and both Rescue Squad four packs ($22.19). Our TRU had four Sarge Boot Camp sets ($29.99). 😀

Target is like a cars shrine now. Hope they keep up. Aside from chase cars I love that I have no real reason to walk into another dirty Wal Mart. GO TARGET!!!
I wish I had a Target to go to! All I have is Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us and Zellers and all of them are constant letdowns!
I hate Walmart. All mine has are ten thousand Lightning McQueens…………and NOTHING else……..
