Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Kmart Cases Future Sealed Value

Several people have asked if they are “saving,” the Kmart CASE K case for their collection or for resale down the line, if they should keep it sealed.

Normally, of course, a factory sealed case is always worth more as “factory sealed,” for obvious reasons and not so obvious reasons.

Of course, factory sealed means it has been un-tampered with after packing. But it also means you as a seller do not have to take any responsibility for what’s ACTUALLY in the case if it was packed great or packed poorly. For many toy lines like Hot Wheels, they will change case assortments along the way so as a seller, you can pretty be absolved of any “displeasure” of the assortment because it’s sealed, it was packed at the factory and 100% out of your hands. All you are doing is passing it along to the final buyer who opened it.

CARS is different because since early 2007, we have pretty much known what’ in each case. Mattel still offers the disclaimer that case assortments are not guaranteed and are subject to change … but with M1054 mainline singles case configurations from 2007 to M1054-998H, there has been very little deviation within each shipment – there have obviously been changes from what’s announced and what gets shipped – but once shipping starts, the deviation rate seems to be less than 1% … and probably closer to .01%.

807 Label

The Kmart CASE K has by far the greatest deviation. At first, I thought it was merely the work of the factory back door eBayers pilfering a few here and there but clearly 5-10% of the cases shipped out as pre-sales were in error (40+ cases) – and not that many singles were available on overseas eBay auctions.

It’s also hard to tell if this % extended to cases that Kmart actually received but presuambly so – of course, during the day of frenzy, you had lots of people who could not tell exactly what was in each case and since even the poor cases had at least 5-6 racers plus Todd, Mini, Vitoline Pitty or chase Mario … unless you are a true CARS geek 😉 … by the time one or more people fumble through a case and it gets dumped in a bin … hard to say for certain.

How did this happen – my guess is the factory underproduced some of the CARS as the Piston Cup racers are much more work – some of them requiring adding paint striping plus more delicate decal placing and aligning versus making more Patti’s. She’s one color, after painting, add eyes – DONE. They could crank out 500 more Patti’s in the time it took to add striping and decals to make 50 Clutch Aid’s … if this only involved a few cases I could see where a packer just wanted to punch out and fill his quota but with hundreds of cases not done accordingly, I would have to say the factory deliberately underproduced to save money and thought no one would notice.

But anyway, so FACTORY SEALED or OPENED BUT VERIFIED.

My feeling is that you will get a better return down the line by opening and verifying. You do not need to remove the CARS but opening and looking will be reassuring to you & the buyer down the line. If & when you are re-selling this case, just point out that you verified this case is correct and you have not actually removed the CARS – that the circumstances of the 5-10% poorly packed cases meant you wanted to be certain and I think they would understand.Plus, for most sellers, unlike most cases, where you can say with a straight face, 99.999% certainly you will get what was announced … with this case, that dips to 95%? 90%, 80%? Sure, you could make a blanket statement in your auction listing such as – I take no responsibility other than you will get 18 Disney Pixar CARS made by Mattel.

However, if given a choice, I believe most buyers would prefer to know versus just an 80%-95% chance when they open the case … and especially if you plan on giving and opening the case maybe as a Christmas gift … by then, it will too late to return it to Kmart if it’s a case you don’t want.

Just my opinion, feel free to disagree with me 🙂

As to the case holding its value. The Spanaway WA K Mart today (6-26) had pegs full of every casting that was available last weekend. There were multiples of everything with the sole exception of Todd. Just one Todd, but, multiples of Mario. There’s more than enough to meet demand as long as you’re near a K-Mart. After the feeding frenzy is over, eBay prices should go down. Of course, future demand means there has to be future interest. If and when Cars Movies becomes extinct, then the market for everything will drop like a rock.

  • rumbler74 says:

Value of sealed or unsealed case? Well, I agree that the price of a sealed case won’t be much in the long run if you can’t verify it’s contents as it’s true value IS in the contents. These error cases shot that idea of saving a sealed case for FUTURE VALUE out the drain. Now as far the the FUTURE VALUE (not present)of the CARDED KMART 2 CARS in the LONG RUN? Well it depends on what the collector is mostly interested in. Do they care that this release of THESE PARTICULAR SET OF CARS (DIFFERENT ones to follow on KMART CARS III) will be the ONLY AUTHENTIC ONES available with rubber tires? Or are they mostly interested in the CAR itself and think of the rubber tires as just a gimmick? If so, well they can just wait till, at least Clutch Aid and Lil Torquey Pistons (only NEW NEW CARS) get released soon as Lightyear Launchers to maybe drive the price down in the LONG RUN. However, bare in mind that these Lightyear Launchers will more than likely cost around 10 dls retail anyway so that price might still stick with at least these 2 around 10 dls or more; although, how much do the other “regular” racers released here cost? Bumper Save (Wal Mart Black Friday 10 dls) Mood Springs (launcher 10 dls) No Stall (launcher and 3 pack 10 dls) Retread (launcher 10 dls) Shifty Drug (launcher 10 dls) Tow Cap (Movie Moment around 10 dls) Easy Idle (launcher 10 dls). You all see a pattern here? NONE of these regular CARS cost under 10 dls to obtain unless you were fortunate enough to buy them at KMART II DAYS. Resell value should stick at at least 10 dls a piece in the LONG RUN. I think the reason why the KMART CARS I RACERS are still commanding such a high aftermarket price is due to the fact that at least 3 of them (Sputter Stop, View Zeen, and Transberry Juice) have not been re-released and are not scheduled to be released any time soon. Not to mention the fact that when they were originally released, they were advertised as first to market CARS. That they were all going to be re-released soon anyway. Well, we are still waiting on at least 3 of them. The other 2, Sparemint and Shiny Wax, well you only have to buy the 3 packs or launcher (10 dls!) to get them. See my point? These particular KMART II RACERS will command a high value in the not so distant future IF they are never re-released the same way with synthetic rubber tires, and IF there are MANY MORE RACERS released in the SAME fashion to the point where one THINKS that they can actually re-create the Speedway of the South Set with AUTHENTIC CARS with Synthetic Rubber Tires. Of course this NEW DEMAND for them would have to come from either collectors who missed out on THESE KMART II CARS or NEW collectors that just came or are about to come on board in the not so distant future. Currently Maters Tall Tales and later CARS 2 and babies growing up becoming NEW fans making fans out of their parents. Whole new generation of fans and collectors are awaiting.

That is good news!! I wish I had that kind or news.

I called again today. They confirmed my order was processed on the 17th, but could not give me any shipping info. She said “it will ship from the vendor’s warehouse to you.”

I quickly replied, “so these are not being sent to you and then to me?” She said, “no.”

Has anyone out there got that second, “sorry we are out and they are due in next week” email and already received their order??? This is getting to be SOOOOO frustrating.

Quick poll, Who else still has not recieved their order?

    • bhutsell says:

My two cases were in a peanut packed box with a KMart UPS label on the outer box, claiming it was shipped from KMart in Naperville, FL.

I received the e-mail you’re talking about, saying they’d ship when they received their next shipment.

You maybe able to go to UPS and Track By Reference. Enter your order number as the reference, but replace the last zero of your order with a one. Input the US and your zip code, and it will tell you if your order is coming without a “shipped” email from KMart.

    • EasyIdle says:

I got that same e-mail on Monday and my cases arrived today. I called the sears number since the charge on my credit card was from Sears.com. When I gave them my order number, then they were able to give me the tracking number. They probably know my number by heart because I called them daily but yesterday someone was finally able to give me a tracking number.

If you can check your credit card online and it WAS charged, then the box is on the way!

    • jestrjef says:

Good News! Kmart Order showed up on my doorstep at about 5 pm eastern yesterday. What was sad is that there was no one at sears.com that seemed to even know my order had shipped.

      No worries now I guess . . . oh wait . . . I still have to open them and see if they are right . . . uh oh . . .

  • bhutsell says:

Finally got my day one pre-order cases today, numbered 54 and 55 of 239. Scared to open…

    On the topic at hand:

Just a quick recap on single Kmart 2 days auction sealed cases, highs went for 199.00 pre sales June 13-19th , lows 86.00 on June 25th.

Since we don’t have KMarts here, I wondered how actually bought these to resell, and tracked the increase in auctions on the actual sale day of June 20th.

So I checked a few times in the afteroon and evening, just the number of actual auctions. On June 20th, the amount of auctions increased in the afternoon hours (when people returned from KMarts) from 532 auctions to 853 late afternoon to 1100 + by 8 pm. This was everything from individual cars to sealed cases.
As of this morning there were 2,232 completed auctions (sold and unsold)

    Simple supply demand economics.

  • uncle skippy says:

I am thinking that this assortment will not hold a really high resell value for a couple of reasons…

    1) It’s like the Star Wars argument… so many people now keep these things MOC it is not hard to find them in decent/like new condition. The value will just not be there. The value I am talking about is people’s impression that these Cars MOC/complete sets will finance a kids future college… Even with MSOS sets going for $3k plus… yes a great increase in value… but unless you have 100’s of these, finance a child’s college with them… nope… especially since eventually with maybe few exceptions, all MSOS cars will be available in one shape or another… But you may be able to offset some book charges at the college store!!!

    2) Specific to this Case K… I received 2 cases at home… Not one totally “Mint” card in the bunch… most had at least 1 soft corner on the bottom of the card… some had corner damage on both bottom corners… I picked through 3-4 freshly opened cases at Kmart on saturday picking out my allotment… all I saw had similar corner softening… as did most that I saw people holding…

    3) Old Hotwheels, original Star Wars, and similar action figures command a higher price because no one back then really saved anything for future selling. there was no eBay back then (for good or bad… I’m not debating eBay here). There may have been a few speculators, but finding pristine carded versions of these 100+ Star Wars figures is not easy to do and will cost you A LOT more than even the MSOS. How many of you all have a collection of 2 or more… one to play with and set(s) to save…

    4) With few exceptions, the Cars line has tens of thousands (probably more) production run of each Car. And they can say whatever they want about “retired” Cars… there is always the possibility of seeing a mold again… you just never know…

I just do not see the long term resale value of any modern toy… not like you have seen with a line like vintage Star Wars or Hot Wheels…

    • hostile takeover banker says:

I completely agree, I can’t see the long term resale value of any modern toy either. IMHO Star Wars changed all of that when it was one of the first films to have merchandising. Sure there wasn’t much, but the detail and quality of the line was outstanding for its time.

Nowadays, every film that gets made, particularly kids films, come with every type of merchandising you can think of. Watch Cars in a Cars DVD player, while drinking from your Cars cup and Cars straw, using your Cars napkin, sitting in a Cars chair, your Cars light off, in your Cars underwear, socks, shorts, shirt and jacket…. well you get the point. Everything is mass produced and mass consumed.

Now excuse me, I need to go shopping.

  • acuransx says:

    Ladies & Gentlecars,

    Lot’s ‘o K-Mart Mattel/Disney/Pixar Cars drama…………..what happened?

Sure wish it was better. I hate drama.

    • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

acuransx- It looks like there aren’t too many Cars guys up late at night. In a nutshell, some of the cases did not have the anticipated distribution of castings. Personally, I do not like exclusives or limited distribution of any toy. It creates a disturbance in the force. Oh, that’s the other toy company! 🙂

  • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

Well, attempting to return to the topic in question: sealed v unsealed. My opinion is to open the case and check for content. Since it is known there is a significant percentage of error cases, a premium should not be assigned to a sealed case. Also, if you are into collecting for investment without checking for dings on cards, etc, you cannot assume your Car casting or the card stock will grade the highest.

Since I believe I may be a ‘little’ older than most of you, I’ve experienced this over the years. Baseball card sets which were unopened, i.e. factory sealed, are assumed to be Mint until the set is opened. Then it is subject to scrutiny. I saw opened sets with damaged key cards or missing cards or like the K-Mart cases, multiples of cards and absence of other cards.

The investor/speculator/pristine condition collector only wants the highest graded toy. Of course, many of you have noticed the poor quality of many paint jobs- brush strokes, bristles in the paint, smudges, etc. All of which makes the casting worth Boo!

Another scam that is currently circulating is collecting supposedly sealed boxes of plastic models. Most of these ripoffs fleece the novice collector who may not know when and which older plastic models were shrink wrapped. Many hobby shops have shrink wrap machines. There is nothing difficult about taking an empty box and shrink wrapping plastic parts/garbage.

As it stands now, if I did not have my K Mart Cars purchased in the flesh, I would not buy a sealed case. If I was a dealer I would not sell a sealed case either without full disclosure to the buyer of the percentage possibility of getting skunked.

Also, don’t expect to send you kid to college on these Wal-Mart cases.

Whelp, tidied up the Cars section of several Targets recently. Plenty of tumbleweed and cactus McQ, anyone need those? Hahahahha, I crack myself up. Otherwise, bupkiss, nada and squat. Patience, patience! Perhaps I should execute some trades.

  • Aaron and Jeanne from Joplin Missouri says:

So I’m sure this is not super cool haha but interesting we just now walked into Walmart And found a Kori turbowitz from the Walmart 8 hah we never found this one whe they were out so it’s cool but I’m thinking it could have just been a return because we go to this walmart at least 3 times a week and it’s never been there ha so lol it’s cool because we didn’t have it but would have been cooler if it was Sven or something hahha

    • PirateDad says:

Nice find, she is the hardest one to find…well done…see kids, continuosly checking your local Wm is the correct hunting technique….for instance, uppon leaving the toy aisle and doing your grocery shopping, one should always return to the toy ailse, just in case they have stocked a new case, or someone returned something…ALWAYS!!!

    • Samuel says:

That’s funny – I found a WM 8 Pace Car this morning at Walmart, package is mint too. Quite a random find there, been over a year since they had any of the WM 8 cars there.

    Long Live the KMART discussion.
    I’m creating a website called Take”K”2Day.
    JUST KIDDING.
I still have the old Paypal “pending” transaction on my account, even though the case purchase was finally resolved via phone and CC. I will check my accounts though. thanks for the heads up PitStop.
BTW..the messed up paypal order that Kevin helped me resolve via telephone arrived today even though the ship date was the 29th.
I was fotunately 3 for 3 with my case assotments. Checked my receipts from Kmart Day. Since last Saturday, I’ve purchased 68 additional cars. Most of them have been traded or locked up in potential trades. UNBELIEVABLE!

  • Claeface73 says:

Enough with the K mart stuff already! Geez! Can we move on to new things like you did before the old page went all screwy?!

  • bhutsell says:

My day 1 preorder cases shipped today…FINALLY!

  • collectormom says:

Open! Release them from their cardboard/plastic prison!

I returned a case today to KM; filled it with 18 Cars that I’ve had (extras I’ve had from other case purchases & are easy to find in stores). I don’t think I’ll buy lots of extras anymore; I get them thinking I may use them as trades but never do.

    • Shelby says:

Did they not check the contents of the case? Can you email me and tell me how you did this…

    • Mr. T says:

      Amen sister!!!!!!!!

    • 5oclockshadow says:

wow … knew that was coming… didn’t think anyone would admit it though …. thats like doing the ol Finish Line McQueen / Tongue McQueen switcheroo….

sadly, I see a lot more of this in Kmarts future ….. would be interesting to know how many returned cases they get back ….

    • MackDaddy says:

OOPS!!! Opened a can o’worms with that one!

    • 5oclockshadow says:

before this possibly gets out of hand when folks wake up….

I did not post to divide folks in this forum….

I fully expected a backlash against me……. The thing I didn’t count on was people actually backing me up… wow…

I have no problem being the bad guy if it gets people thinking….

When I first came here this place felt like a great little community, where people actually helped each other out….
… but lately this place has felt more like a hangout for closet eBayers… I agree with ‘Mia, Tia and NJM’ … the trading forum is a joke these days… trying to sell something on there for eBay prices is an insult to fellow collectors on here… keep it on eBay… if you want to trade, or help someone out then please go right ahead…

I have a hard time telling anymore if people are more excited about new Cars coming because it is actually something they really want, or because its something new they can sell ….
… the Kmart hoarding has really highlighted the latter….

I have no ill-will toward collectormom at all; nor am I pointing fingers. She seems like a wonderful person and has been a funny and creative poster on here… She has her reasons for doing what she did, and I don’t think she intentionally felt she was doing something wrong….

but it didn’t feel right just letting people think this could possibly be ok without thinking it through first… why turn around and screw Kmart and Dev after doing something great for us ….. why clog their shelves up and hurt their sales ? ….

yeah maybe I should have just came out and said this from the beginning.. and yes this has been gnawing at me for a long time….

where is that one poster at when you need him … “be kind to your fellow collectors” …….

theres your elephant …. goodnight ….

      • John in Missouri says:

If it were MY Kmart, they’d be THRILLED with 18 new singles to put out on the pegs!

      • Samuel says:

While I agree that the trading forum prices can quickly get ridiculous, are you saying that the trading forum should only list items for sale at their true cost? I doubt anyone is going to offer a SOTS set for $299 or a Sidewall Shine for $22.

        • Edge says:

True, but if people start listing CHASE cars at $10, $15, when in reality they cost closer to $4, like all the other singles, then that IS a bit ridiculous, especially if it is WITHOUT ship and PayPal.

        • John in Missouri says:

I couldn’t agree with you more Samuel!!

        • Nascarfan says:

The trading forum should be left alone. To bad we DO NOT have a forum that we can swap n trade at near costs ourselves.

          Met:

          Trade Forum?

          For Sale Forum?

I dont mind paying 1.00 a car sometimes even 2.00 car. over costs.

BUT for everyones knowledge…(hope everyone find this good news) the ones that I did buy this time (even the ones that I needed at 2x the actual costs PLUS shipping) were to correct cases for other people that got here with the wrong contents. Even driving around town here looking for the correct ones.

Some were not interested in helping at costs, wanted higher prices yet, so I looked elsewhere…I am fine with that. “Good luck on your sales”

“Putting the Money Back into TFAD’ers”…

I did use this 11.00 case check charge that some people paid to buy these items and get these cases fixed.

          Direectly or indirectly….
          Everyone benefits.
          Everyone helped everyone.

I opened and checked 47 cases, 8 were bad and now thanks to people that sold them at near costs OR twice the costs ALL but 3 of my cases are now fixed.

Only 3 cases of mine went out bad. They chose not to care for various reasons, BUT, I did make sure that they got a perfect case along with that bad one.

        • 5oclockshadow says:

not what I am saying at all….. but this place could help folks from having to resort to eBay… a recent Speedway of the South set sold for $1600 buy it now.. the same person could sell it for $1520 on the trading forum, and still made the same amount of money as he would from eBay, and helped a fellow take5er get it cheaper in the process… instead the general consensus seems to be to try and sell it on the trading forum for eBay price to make up for that extra $80 they would be losing on eBay…

just an example … but hopefully you can see my point…

      • Nascarfan says:

5 0clock, i agree, wasnt the best thing to post about but, I would never consider it.

  • L8rM8r says:

Yeah I would open an verify, just to be safe. I didn’t think that a case of the first Kmart event would be worth much, but I was wrong as they became harder and harder to come by and new collectors came through. I guess it just takes 6 months or so for them to become scarce and then demand increases and supply decreases.

One that I am surprised about is the last year SDCC exclusive. I always thought that they would slowly go up in price as they were a limited release, but they still seem to be getting the same price as they did 6 months ago. I guess the racers are just more desirable as collectors and fans try and recreate the SOTS.

  • Slightly off topic but I just got billed an extra $416.82 by Kmart.com. That would be the equivalent to 6 cases on the 1st Pre-Sale with free shipping. Not sure what is going on but you guys might want to keep an eye on your cc statements.
