Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Um, Look Before You Leap at the Stores?

As with any mass production lines, there will be days or periods where the production inspector takes a nap. It usually happens when the toy company wants to cut costs and the factory says something, “You want cost cuts, I’ll show you cost cuts!”

“No glue for you!”

Or as “Camlgt,” “Buckland-Blowouts” and “Ricky S.” sent us pics – if you’re picky about your CARS and you know it, better take a good long look with a magnifying glass … or in the case of these photos, maybe not necessary.

pitty

Okay, no more tying one on with an unbalanced load.

I guess that Texas peanut factory inspector found a new job …

Marketing: This isn’t paint-hasn’t-dried-before-boxing Leak Less …

leak-less21

It’s “Realistic Street Version” Leak Less – a Matty exclusive … What truck doesn’t have a little grime … in fact, let me spray paint some graffiti on it and called it the limited art edition (just kidding 🙂 ).

leak-less3

I don’t cotton to this … um, free fuzz.

octane

What happens when metal bugs hit metal rig …

wingo1

No teeth on a Wingo CHASE car? That’s an eBaying …

Just remember that with any mass produced items, there will be error ones … from real life planes, trains and automobiles to diecasts, there will be problem ones to PROBLEM ones … if you’re lucky, it’s an error that people will pay you extra for like Wingo Chase with missing teeth but when it comes to chips or extra cotton fuzz, not so much … of course, if you’re opening for a 2-year old to drive off your third story banister, no biggie but if you plan on holding onto it sealed or as mint as possible – you do need one sans chips, fuzz or paint rub …

Thanks for the pics, “Camlgt,” “Buckland-Blowouts” and “Ricky S.”

I was wondering how the pitties got chipped like that. Did someone at the factory have a bad day or did they just decide to pitch them all in a box (where they were banged up) before dumping them onto a conveyor belt to be placed into the packaging?

And my Greta also has a slight chip above her left front headlight. I could have waited, but as that was the first time I had seen her on the shelf I got her.

Chuck Manifold’ eyes are somewhat messed up. It looks like someone scratched into the paint near his right eye.

I also have noticed that the Radiator Springs McQueens’ ‘eye white’ areas are not as strong as they once were as well.

Though I did go to Matty’s Facebook page, and even there, the exclusives aren’t without errors. Someone got a ‘Masters of the Universe’ Fakor figure with 2 left feet.

The DC Classic line from Mattel is even worse. I have seen multiples with their arms and hands on backwards and some pretty bad smeared looking paint jobs. Their joints are very stiff; and I have heard others complain of limbs breaking off when they tried to pose them.

2 left feet, that is hilarious! Are we sure someone didn’t purposely do that on the assembly line? haha

    • racerguy says:

Yeah, someone got in trouble for sneaking cars out of the factory, so they decided to take it out on the cars still in the factory….

I never understood why people would want to pay more for a factory flawed toy. I mean the missing teeth Wingo should be worth less in my opinion.

Poorly made Cars, lousy paint jobs, chipped paints, etc, etc, etc are probably going to give a boost to the high end collector Cars of the future with nice clean paint jobs and real rubber tires.

You have to look twice before you buy! It’s obvious Mattel inspectors are not doing their job. Of course, all of these Cars are made by the lowest bidder. How else is Wal*Mart able to cut the price?

Some of the Cars’ paint jobs I’ve seen remind of my old 1993 blue Ford Tempo with the factory installed peeling paint job!!

I just noticed a handful of Radiator Springs McQ’s at my TRU and all had pink decals and eyes.

Looked like Lightning was just back from a weekend bender

Quality in motion, LOL!! I’ve learned to look over all of my potential purchases for flaws.

  • Roswell says:

hmmm, saw a race o ramma movie moments pack today with chick and bruiser,
decided not to get it cus bruiser looked like he fell out the back of the hauler on the way to the track,
his eyes were badly placed on and scratched and his cap had a chip in it…also, he up packaged upsidedown!

  • Dunroamin says:

    met!
HELP:what do i do my wally never gets any new regular sized cars in beacuse they still have 31 exactly from 2007 blimp and ghostlight ramone and its driving me crazy cause when we get new ones their gone like crazy anything i can do?

(MET: WM has a CONTACT US email so you can inform them … in theory, store managers are supposed to mark down old merchandise so new stuff can come in).

  • racerguy says:

Wow, nice paint jobs…. I’ve noticed the paint quality slipping recently, but it looks like they played football with the cars before packaging them; I mean, come on: how does a car lose 1/4th of it’s paint before being opened? And BTW, that 1st picture was mine…..

  • Those pictures make me sad and a little angry.

The quality of the Cars’ paint jobs and decal placement has been up and down for a few years now. I found three 3-car gift packs with Mater and all the pitties had chips. There was also one No Stall set and one of the Cars in the set had a paint smear across his mouth.

If I’m buying a NEW Car off the shelf I would like it to look NEW regardless of whether my son ends up smashing it up within two minutes or not.

    • iamspeed says:

I found the same issues with the 3 pack with Mater, Bruiser, and Wide Pitty, fresh out of the case at TRU…….had to search for the sets where Bruiser didn’t have chips on his “cap”. 2 of every 3 failed the inspection. Pittys seam to be the biggest problem with chips.

  • MiaSenorita says:

Good timing! I just bought my second Octane Gain hauler today.. hit hat is got some road rash… Looks like they skidded him across the factor floor on his head! Guess that’s the opener for my 3 year old 🙂

  • slicepie says:

I want the Wingo with no teeth. Whoever took the photo, did you buy it? Still have it? Want to sell or trade it?

New guidelines for all Mattel products produced after Nov 30,2008 on paint requirements. New laws on how much lead in the paint. So drying time is longer.

  • CaptainChunk says:

It has become a wide spread problem lately all across the line. I’ve seen minis, megasized, singles, and haulers that look like they were played with by a horde of 5 year olds and then packaged up for sale.
