Revel in some eye candy with electron microscopy
Occasionally the web reveals a real gem. Months ago I stumbled across this web site based in Germany that produces electron microscopy photos of things on the micron level. Want to see what a dust mite really looks like? Or why people with hay fever honk so much? Wanna dig what those tiny little flecks of pollen really look like? Well, check it out:
Ouch! I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t honk those suckers out more often. Attach a chain to those things and you could get medieval on someone.
Remember the killer scifi film from the 60’s, Fantastic Voyage? (which reminds me of that killa Coolio tune). Well, that world is real and visible if you got the right tools. Dig what the boys and girls in the lab over in Deutschland are using:
“Laboratory for specimen preparation with Critical-Point-Dryer and Plasma-Coater with Gold palladium targets. Digitized Amray 1610 Turbo scanning electron microscope with LaB6 cathode, Ion-getter and Turbo-molecular pumps. Detectors: Secondary-electron detector, Semiconductor-detector and Robinson-detector to create images of the various energetic electrons. With the special digitizing system “Win-DISS” from Point-Electronic, all detectors can be scanned simultaneous to get the highest photographic quality. Digital imaging and coloring is done with high-performance Macintosh Computers. Transmission-Electron Microscopy, Computer tomography and X-ray are done in cooperation with several scientific and medical institutes in Germany. “
Man, that makes Engadget look like a site for the DeeDeeDees.
