300 – It’s All That and a Bag of Dolmas
Just when you think you know everything, along comes a movie about a war fought 2,500 years ago that is the latest crazebuzz. It has opened an interesting film debate on the cluelessness of modern day film critics – are they so afraid to be called out by their fellow brethern critics as shallow? That like the Academy Awards, they refuse to acknowledge action or comedy can ever be “art?” That only ponderous, bleak dramas are the only type of film deserving of praise? That one cannot simply enjoy the two hours of storytelling as storytelling? Like all the criticism directed last summer at “Pirates of the Caribbean 2,” if I recall correctly, it was NOT based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel and not written by James Joyce but rather a movie based on a theme park ride – hello? Hello? Helll-ooow?
So enjoy “300” on its own merits – how bad can a film be if it inspires stiff reviews?
Besides, the film is really like “A Convenient Truth,” a graphically illustrated Keynote presentation on:
•Fight from your strength.
•Dictate the nature of the conflict.
•Choose the battlefield.
•Use the element of surprise.
•Accept help from unlikely allies.
•Do something memorable.
